Tri-Star Seafood Supply live spot prawns norovirus recall overview:

  • Who: Tri-Star Seafood Supply Ltd. recalled certain Tri-Star Seafood Supply Ltd. brand live spot prawns.
  • Why: The company recalled the prawns due to possible norovirus contamination.
  • Where: The recalled product was sold in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario and may have been distributed in other provinces and territories.

Tri-Star Seafood Supply Ltd. recalled certain packets of prawns as they may be contaminated with norovirus.

The Government of Canada website posted the recall May 31, which applies to certain Tri-Star Seafood Supply Ltd. brand live spot prawns with codes AJ200-021, CA001-1532 or CA001-1540.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) triggered the recall with findings during its investigation into a foodborne illness outbreak, the recall notice says.

There have been some reported illnesses associated with the product, although the recall did not say how many or in which provinces.

People with norovirus illness usually develop symptoms of gastroenteritis within 24 to 48 hours, but symptoms can start as early as 12 hours after exposure. The illness often begins suddenly. The main symptoms of norovirus illness are diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and stomach cramps.

Tri-Star Seafood Supply is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Tri-Star Seafood Supply sold the recalled product in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario, but it may have been distributed in other provinces and territories.

“Do not consume the recalled product… Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased,” the recall states.

The CFIA is conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products. It is verifying that retailers remove the recalled product from the marketplace.

The news comes as the CFIA recently issued two new recalls notices for certain Taylor Shellfish and Pacific Rim Shellfish oysters due to possible norovirus contamination.
