Quaker recall class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: A British Columbia resident named Jessica Simpson filed a class action lawsuit against The Quaker Oats Company and PepsiCo Canada.
  • Why: Simpson sued over potential salmonella contamination which already led the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to initiate a recall of Quaker products.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed on behalf of consumers through Canada.

A class action lawsuit has been filed against The Quaker Oats Company and PepsiCo Canada in the wake of product recalls initiated over concerns of salmonella contamination.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) initiated a recall for 38 Quaker products on Jan. 11 — including some of its granola bars and cereal — and expanded the recall days later to include more than 30 yogurt and parfait products, reports Global News

In the lawsuit, plaintiff Jessica Simpson, a British Columbia resident, reportedly claims she began having symptoms of salmonella poisoning after consuming Quaker’s Dipps Granola Bar product.

Simpson says her symptoms began a few hours after consuming the Dipps Granola Bar and persisted for two days, reports Global News.

The Quaker class action lawsuit reportedly seeks to represent a class of all Canadian consumers who purchased any of the 38 Quaker products included in the recall, or who believe they became ill after eating one of them.

Consumers advised not to serve, use, sell or distribute recalled Quaker products

The recall includes dozens of different Quaker products, including various flavors of Harvest Crunch cereals, Cap’n Crunch treat bars, and chewy and yogurt granola bars with best before dates between Jan. 11, 2024, and Oct. 7, 2024.

Consumers have been advised not to serve, use, sell or distribute the recalled products, and to either throw them out or return them to their original place of purchase.

The CFIA has also advised consumers to contact a health care provider if they believe they have become sick after eating one of the recalled Quaker products. The federal government said no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall as of Jan. 19, according to the federal government, reports Global News.

The recall came in the wake of a nationwide U.S. recall in December for Quaker products over concerns of a potential salmonella contamination. That recall was also later expanded to include additional cereal, granola bar and snack products.

Quaker said in a statement earlier this month that the Canadian recall was in direct response to the recall in the U.S., reports Global News.
