UPDATE: The claim filing period for the Canada Silk and Great Value plant milk class action settlement is now open. On April 17, 2026, the Superior Court of Quebec granted final approval of the settlement. Eligible class members have until Oct. 16, 2026, to submit a claim. Claim filing instructions are provided below.

Danone Canada, Walmart Canada, Joriki and Intact Insurance Co. agreed to pay $7.5 million CAD (around $4.8 million USD) to resolve claims that Silk and Great Value plant-based products can cause serious illness.

The Silk settlement benefits Canadian residents who purchased or ingested Silk or Great Value plant-based products that were recalled on July 8, 2024.

According to claims made in the class action lawsuit, Silk and Great Value plant-based products were contaminated with harmful bacteria, including E. coli and Listeria monocytogenes. The contamination caused serious illness, including three alleged deaths.

Silk is a plant-based milk brand owned by Danone, while Great Value is Walmart’s store brand.

Danone Canada, Walmart Canada, Joriki and Intact Insurance Co. have not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to this class action settlement to resolve these allegations.

Under the terms of the Silk recall settlement, class members can receive compensation for medical expenses, lost wages and other damages related to illness caused by contaminated Silk and Great Value products.

The Silk settlement includes a compensation grid that outlines various payments available to class members based on the type of illness they experienced and the medical treatment they received.

Compensation varies by illness severity and documentation, with payments ranging from $400 to capped amounts up to $300,000, depending on the claim tier.

Class members who did not experience any illness but still wish to receive a refund for their purchase can benefit from the defendants’ voluntary refund program. This program will remain in place until the end of the claim period, which closes Oct. 16, 2026.

The deadline for exclusion and objection was Dec. 22, 2025.

The Silk recall settlement received preliminary approval from a Quebec court on Nov. 17, 2025. Final approval was granted on April 17, 2026.
