Fresh Start Foods has recalled certain lots of its cantaloupe that was distributed in Alberta and British Columbia, Canada, over concerns it may be contaminated with salmonella.

The recall involves cantaloupe that was sold as a three count with the code 258, 261, 262, 263, 264, 265, 268, 269, 270 and the UPC 6 20868 12079 7.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency originally published the recall on Oct. 5 under the fresh fruits and vegetables subcategory of food.

Retailers and consumers have been advised not to use, sell, serve, or distribute the recalled cantaloupes.

Recall is third involving cantaloupe during the month of October

Individuals who have consumed the recalled Fresh Start Foods cantaloupe and who develop symptoms of a salmonella infection are advised to seek medical attention, according to Food Safety News

Symptoms of salmonella poisoning can include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and a fever that can start within 12 to 72 hours after eating food that has been contaminated with salmonella, and can last for four to seven days in otherwise healthy adults.

The recall comes after Eagle Produce recalled 6,456 cases of whole cantaloupes in the US after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) discovered salmonella during testing

In that case, the recall involved cantaloupes that were distributed across 20 states throughout the Midwest, East Coast, and California areas of the US.

The recall also follows an October recall by Gordon Food Services and North American Produce Sales for Kandy brand cantaloupe that was distributed in British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, and Saskatchewan Canada, reports Food Safety News.
