Raw Oyster Norovirus Recall Overview:

  • Who: Taylor Shellfish and Pacific Rim Shellfish are recalling batches of their raw oysters.
  • Why: The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has found the oysters are possibly contaminated by norovirus in its investigation of a Canadian foodborne illness outbreak.
  • Where: The oysters were sold in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Yukon and may have been distributed in other provinces and territories.

Two more brands of raw oysters are being recalled as the Canadian government battles a foodborne illness outbreak linked to norovirus in raw oysters.

On Mar. 27, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued two new recalls notices for certain Taylor Shellfish and Pacific Rim Shellfish oysters due to possible norovirus contamination.

“Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased,” the recall notices say.

The recall comes after Raw BC recalled a batch of its raw oysters earlier this month due to possible norovirus contamination.

The recalls were triggered by findings by the CFIA during its investigation into a foodborne illness outbreak in Canada.

“There have been reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products,” the recalls said.

The companies are not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Oyster Recalls Issued in Multiple Provinces, Territories

The oysters were sold in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Yukon and may have been distributed in other provinces and territories, the recall notice said.

The Taylor Shellfish recall applies to certain Fanny Bay, Royal Miyagi and Sunseeker brand oysters with the exact batch numbers available here.

The Pacific Rim recall applies to certain XSM and MLarge oysters with the exact product details available here.

The CFIA said it is conducting a food safety investigation into the norovirus outbreak, which may lead to the recall of other products. If other high-risk products are recalled, the CFIA will notify the public through updated food recall warnings.

“The CFIA is verifying that the industry is removing the recalled products from the marketplace,” it said.

Norovirus can cause symptoms of gastroenteritis within 12 to 48 hours of exposure. Norovirus symptoms may include diarrhea, vomiting, stomach cramps, nausea, low-grade fever, headache, muscle aches, chills and/or fatigue.

People experiencing diarrhea and/or vomiting should drink plenty of liquids to prevent dehydration. Norovirus symptoms generally subside within a day or two and do not typically cause long-term health effects.

In 2020, The Canadian Food Inspection Agency had to recall certain Sawmill Bay Shellfish brand Pacific Aquacultured Oysters due to norovirus contamination, which made a number of consumers sick.
