Cantaloupe recall overview:
- Who: A variety of CF Dallas, Dulcinea, Crown Jewels Produce, Sofia Produce, Trufresh, Malichita, Z Farms and Rudy cantaloupes and cantaloupe products joined an existing cantaloupe recall.
- Why: The whole cantaloupes and cantaloupe products may have been exposed to salmonella.
- Where: The cantaloupe recalls include whole cantaloupes and cantaloupe products distributed throughout the United States and Canada.
A variety of CF Dallas, Dulcinea, Crown Jewels Produce, Sofia Produce, Trufresh, Malichita, Z Farms and Rudy cantaloupes and cantaloupe products have been added to a cantaloupe recall due to the potential for salmonella contamination.
Pacific Trellis Fruit LLC recalled 4,872 cases of Dulcinea’s Malichita brand whole cantaloupe distributed from Oct. 18-26 in California, Illinois, Oklahoma, Texas and Wisconsin and sold in various retail supermarkets.
Sofia Produce’s Trufresh label announced a recall for all sizes of fresh cantaloupes packaged in cardboard containers labeled Malichita or Rudy and sold from Oct. 10-Nov. 3. Those cantaloupes were sent to Arizona, California. Connecticut, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Texas, Florida and Canada.
CF Dallas LLC recalled some of its fresh-cut products made from whole cantaloupe related to the Sofia Produce recall. All of those products have expired but were previously distributed to retail stores in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Illinois, Texas and Louisiana.
Crown Jewels Produce initiated a recall for all sizes of 1,960 boxes of Malichita Z Farms cantaloupes sold between Oct. 31 and Nov. 9. Those cantaloupes were distributed in Ohio and California through retail and wholesale outlets.
The recalls join a previous Trufresh Malichita cantaloupe recall that came after the Canadian Food Inspection Agency announced a similar cantaloupe recall for those packaged with the same Malichita label.
Salmonella cantaloupe illness impacts 97 individuals so far, Trufresh says
Trufresh says there are 97 illnesses to date reported from this strain of salmonella. Pacific Trellis Fruit and CF Dallas say there have been no reports of illness related to their products. The companies are not facing legal action over the recalls, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
