Antisemitic universities allegations class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Class action lawsuits were recently filed against University of British Columbia (UBC), York University, Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) and Queen’s University
  • Why: The universities are accused of failing to take action against anti-semitic incidents that have allegedly occurred on their campuses.
  • Where: The complaints have been filed in Canada.

Class action lawsuits revolving around claims of antisemitism have recently been filed against the University of British Columbia (UBC), York University, Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) and Queen’s University.

The class action lawsuits against UBC, TMU and Queen’s — which each seek $15 million in damages — were filed on behalf of all current and former Jewish students at the universities going back to 1998, reports CityNews Toronto

The complaint against York, which was reportedly filed a week earlier, meanwhile, is on behalf of all current students, recent alumni and attendees of the school from between 1998 and 2021, reports CityNews Toronto

The universities have been accused of failing to take action against anti-semitic incidents that have allegedly occurred, instead allegedly opting only to offer “superficial statements without meaningful resolution.”

Antisemitic graffiti, speakers cited in claims against universities

Among the alleged antisemitic incidents collectively cited includes the discovery of antisemitic graffiti located on and off the Queen’s University campus in November 2022, as well as graffiti found in a TMU washroom allegedly urging Jews to “burn in hell,” reports CityNews Toronto.

In regard to UBC, the university has been accused of having for decades a “well-documented history of antisemitic sentiments” on its campuses in Vancouver and Kelowna, B.C., reports the CBC

The lawsuit reportedly cites a number of different incidents, including a speaking engagement in 2022 by Laith Marouf, an anti-racism consultant with an alleged history of making anti-semitic remarks.

UBC, in addition to allegedly failing to address antisemitic incidents, has also been accused of providing its staff with insufficient training to handle harassment incidents and violating its own non-discrimination policies, reports the CBC.

In addition to the university, the Alma Mater Society of UBC, Students’ Union Okanagan and the Graduate Students Society have also reportedly been named as defendants in the class action lawsuit.

In July 2022, a former student at the University of New Brunswick requested class certification for claims the school failed to protect her from allegedly being sexually assaulted by Dr. Manoj Bhargava, who worked at the school’s Student Health Centre.
