LG refrigerator compressor defect class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: John Prins filed a class action lawsuit against LG Electronics Canada, Inc.
  • Why: Prins claims LG manufacturers and sells refrigerators containing defective linear compressors which prevent them from being able to keep food cool or frozen.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.

LG Electronics Canada manufactures and sells refrigerators containing defective linear compressors which are prone to failing and keeping the units from being able to cool or freeze food, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff John Prins claims he was not made aware of any defect when he purchased the LG refrigerator and that the company failed to address the issue when he presented it to them in a timely manner, injuring him financially.

Prins claims he would not have purchased or paid a “premium price” for the LG refrigerator had he known it contained the alleged compressor defect.

“The Plaintiff chose the Defendant’s product in part because he understood the Defendant’s refrigerators to be reliable, fully functional, high-quality, and designed with premium features,” states the LG refrigerator class action.

Prins says the LG refrigerator he purchased came with a manufacturers warranty which purported to cover certain defects, however, it took more than three weeks for LG to repair his refrigerator and cost him around $274 for labour repair costs.

LG accused of lagging on fixing alleged compressor defect

During this time, Prins argues he was forced to buy food daily—including pricier ready made meals—throw food away and was unable to keep leftovers, in addition to having to purchase a secondhand mini-fridge.

Prins wants to represent a Class of all Canadian residents who purchased an LG refrigerator not for resale from LG or an authorised retailer since Jan. 30, 2014.

Prins claims LG is guilty of unjust enrichment, breach of contract, negligence, and negligent misrepresentation, and in violation of the Sale of Goods Act, Competition Act, and the Consumer Protection Act, 2002

Plaintiff is requesting pecuniary, special, punitive, aggravated, and exemplary damages for himself and all Class Members.

Home appliance company Electrolux recalled certain Frigidaire and Electrolux side-by-side, top freezer and multi-door refrigerators over concerns their ice-level arm detectors could break into pieces and drop into the unit’s ice bucket.

Also last month, Hisense issued a recall for its refrigerators built with french doors over concerns the doors could detach when being opened, injuring consumers.

having issues with LG as well, woke up to find water on my floor due to melted ice and all my frozen food thawed due to faulty compressor. called service and was quoted 1400.00 to repair compressor call LG because it stated i have 10 warranty on my compressor, come to find out its part only warranty and i have to pay 595.00 + tax for lg service tech to install the compressor. so disappointing the level of customer service as this is a know defect. this cost does not include the initial service call i paid for or the loss of all my food. i will never purchase LG again
