Hisense refrigerator recall:

  • Who: Hisense recalled a refrigerator with french doors.
  • Why: The refrigerator’s doors can detach when the consumer tries to open them, posing an injury hazard.
  • Where: The recall is effective in the United States and Canada.

Hisense recalled tens of thousands of its refrigerators in the United States and Canada after multiple reports of the doors coming loose with five people injured by the doors so far.

In a notice posted June 9 to the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission website, Hisense says it recalled about 55,200 of its french door refrigerators in the United States and 78 in Canada.

The recall applies to Hisense USA’s 26.6 cubic foot capacity stainless steel french door refrigerators with ice maker with model number HRF266N6CSE and serial numbers C2020050100001 through C2020123109000.

“The refrigerator’s door hinge can break, causing the door to detach when the consumer tries to open the French doors, posing an impact injury hazard to the consumer,” the notice says.

So far, Hisense received 139 reports of the refrigerator doors loosening or detaching and five reports of injuries, including foot bruises and lacerations, according to the notice.

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Recalled Hisense refrigerators sold through Lowe’s

The fridges were sold at Lowe’s stores nationwide and online at Lowes.com from August 2020 through February 2022 for about $1,500.

“Consumers should immediately stop using the refrigerator if the recalled refrigerator’s doors fail to open or close normally until they are repaired,” the recall states. “Consumers should contact Hisense USA to determine if their unit is part of the recall and to schedule a free in-home service appointment to have the refrigerator door hinges replaced.”

The brand name, model and serial number for each unit are printed on a label located on the left side of the interior of the refrigerator above the water dispenser. With the serial number, consumers can check to determine whether their refrigerator is included in this recall by clicking here

In related refrigerator news, two Samsung customers sued the South Korean electronics giant and its American offshoot for allegedly defective refrigerators that “pose unreasonable risks of property damage and serious personal injury during normal use” by running above temperatures for safe food storage.
