Online sneaker company StockX has agreed to a class action settlement to resolve claims that it failed to prevent a 2019 data breach.
The class action was authorized for settlement purposes only earlier this year by the Superior Court of Quebec, according to a news release announcing the settlement.
Customer’s names, email addresses, shoe sizes, trading currency, and encrypted passwords were reportedly stolen after unknown individuals were able to gain access to StockX’s cloud environment, reports Insurance Business.
The class action settlement may benefit individuals who live in Canada and who registered for a user account on StockX on either its mobile app or online website before the data breach on May 14, 2019, according to the release.
Eligible Class Members will be given access to a TransUnion credit monitoring service free of charge for 18 months, according to the StockX data breach settlement.
Individuals who are able to provide evidence of out-of-pocket losses or other expenses incurred due to the data breach will also be eligible for monetary reimbursement totalling up to an aggregate cap of $130,000, according to the release.
StockX data breach settlement pending approval Of Superior Court of Quebec
The StockX data breach settlement is pending approval by the Superior Court of Quebec, which will determine if it is fair and reasonable and in the best interest of Class Members to accept.
Also this month, Claire’s agreed to pay $350,000 to resolve claims related to a 2020 data breach which compromised the sensitive personal information of its customers.
The data breach against Claire’s occurred after hackers were able to make their way into the accessory stores systems through its cloud on Salesforce.
The Claire’s class action settlement will benefit consumers whose personal information may have been compromised in the data breach between April 7, 2020 and June 17, 2020.
