Ontario vaccine management system data breach overview:

  • Who: The government of Ontario said it will begin notifying residents impacted by a November 2021 data breach of its COVID-19 vaccine management system.
  • Why: The data breach exposed the personal data of 360,000 Ontario residents who made appointments or accessed COVID-19 vaccine certificates using the province’s vaccine booking system.
  • Where: The data breach affected Ontario residents.

The government of Ontario said it plans to begin notifying the 360,000 residents impacted by a data breach of its COVID-19 vaccine management system that exposed their personal data.

Ontario has said that 95 per cent of those affected by the data breach — which resulted in criminal charges for two individuals — only had their names and/or phone numbers exposed, reports IT World Canada.

Around four per cent of Ontario residents impacted by the November 2021 data breach, meanwhile, reportedly also had their health card numbers exposed.

Authorities in Ontario discovered the data breach after individuals who had previously scheduled COVID-19 vaccine appointments through its provincial booking system began complaining about receiving spam text messages requesting personal information, CBC News reported

Residents who used Ontario’s provincial booking system to access their COVID-19 vaccine certificates also reportedly complained about receiving the unwanted text messages asking for personal info.

The government of Ontario said it has been working with the police and privacy commissioner since discovering the data breach and has maintained that no private health information was improperly accessed, the Toronto Star reported

The Ministry of Public and Business Service Delivery, meanwhile, said in a statement that it has faith in the province’s vaccine booking system, while calling it a “safe and secure tool for Ontarions to use.”

“Ontario’s COVID-19 vaccine booking system is regularly monitored and tested as part of the Ministry of Health’s cybersecurity protocols,” the Ministry of Health said, according to the Toronto Star.

Earlier this month, Amnesty International Canada disclosed to the public that it was the victim of a “sophisticated digital security breach” that it believes was conducted by a China-sponsored threat group

Amnesty International Canada said the data breach — which it says did not compromise any membership or donor data — was discovered in October after the human rights organization noticed “suspicious activity” occurring within its IT infrastructure.

Received a Letter from the government saying they had found my name and phone number in the accused laptops in the evidence seized by the OPP. Letter received November 24th of 2022. And had my bank account hacked due to this.

  2. Darlene says:

I got a notice in my email from my docotrs office stating that there system has been hacked and my personal information may have been discovered

  3. Bob Thompson says:

I got notice from Ontario that my data was included in the breached information. Prior to receiving this notice I kept wondering why my cellphone was constantly being called with scam calls, increased texts same thing and my email address was inundated.
Would be very interested in joining a class action suit if any contemplated.
