Update:

  • A class action lawsuit targeting protestors participating in the “Freedom Convoy” is expanding with lawyers focused on getting the lawsuit certified to ensure Ottawa residents and businesses are compensated, CBC reports.
  • On May 2, an Ontario Superior Court Justice said an injunction restricting convoy leaders from “selling, removing, dissipating, alienating, transferring or assigning” up to $20 million in assets raised around the world would be dissolved.
  • However, he also said a third-party agent could continue to hold just more than $5.7 million raised by the convoy protests until lawyers decide what will happen to the money.
  • Meanwhile, lawyers for the plaintiffs told CBC they were expecting to expand the scope of the proposed class action lawsuit to include thousands of defendants, including donors and more truck drivers, as they seek to reimburse residents and businesses impacted by the convoy.

A class action lawsuit targeting protestors participating in the “Freedom Convoy” is now asking for $306 million in damages after 31 new defendants were named.

Plaintiffs claim the members of the Freedom Convoy have caused a disruption to their lives during what is now a three-week occupation of Ottawa’s downtown city center, reports Canada.com

The class action lawsuit originally sought $9.8 million in damages when it was first filed by plaintiff Zexi Li earlier this month

The Freedom Convoy, which began as a group of truckers protesting a vaccination requirement to pass between the Canada and US border, has turned into a broader protest of Canada’s COVID-19 restrictions and regulations.

Thousands of individuals have joined the protest at times, which is based in Canada’s capital city and is now in its third week.

The claim has been expanded to include anyone who donated money to the protest through GiveSendGo, after GoFundMe shut down the campaign after saying it found evidence of “violence and other unlawful activity.”

Two well-known downtown Ottawa restaurant owners — Henry Assad, owner of the Happy Goat, and Ivan Gedz of Union Local 613 — also joined the class action lawsuit, along with a ByWard market server who says they have been put out of work since the beginning of the demonstration, reports Canada.com

Claim Adds Up To 12,000 Residences, Hundreds Of Businesses

The claim has also been amended to cover a larger area, adding as many as 12,000 residences and hundreds of businesses.

The move comes three days after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau invoked the Emergencies Act, the first time it has ever been used in response to a protest or blockade, reports CBC

An Ottawa judge had already granted a 10-day injunction to stop the protestors from blaring their truck horns in the city, however demonstrators reportedly began disregarding the order after four days, reports CBC.

The injunction was supposed to keep protestors from blaring their truck horns through Feb. 18, and gave the police the power to arrest anyone who disobeyed it.

The US government has also taken notice of the Freedom Convoy, urging Canada to use its federal powers to end the protest.

    1. Andrew says:

I’m looking forward to this class action level setting these finances. You “freedom” people are the worst.

  2. Slave says:

Trudeau please give more mandates, more restrictions, more boosters. The citizens of canada demand less choice, less options. We need the govt to do what’s best for us and tell us how to live. Please Justin get all citizens on a free system where food, clothes, medicine, water, everything gets distributed once a month to people. If you get food you don’t like or medication you’re allergic to then you better use it anyway because going against the govt means you will be cut off from food and supplies and you will starve to death unless someone helps you. But they will be treated even harsher if they are caught. Please Justin save us control us we need your Godlike Guidance. Tell us who to hate so we can feel safe. I had to disown my daughter for being unvax – I kicked her out in the middle of winter and didn’t let her take any clothes or food. That’ll teach her to go against our govt. They know better than us what’s good for us. Just shut up and do what you’re told when you’re told and we will be free to do whatever we want during the hours we are allowed outside

  3. Tammy McNamara says:

My husband had to have a diabetic doctors appointment canceled because his doctor is downtown and they feared for the safety of the patients.

  4. Dr Andrew VALLERAND says:

Congrats to the Leader of the Freedom Convoy Class Action suit Zexi Li, together with your Team and lawyer Paul Champ for absolutely brilliant Leadership in the last week of the weeks long Illegal Occupation of Canada.

Under your Leadership, your Team superbly defused and regained the upper hand of the illegal occupation of the Nation in general and in particular, the National Capital Region, by illegal protesters terrorizing the Nation. Your leadership was truly remarkable particularly when municipal, provincial and federal governments had stuttered in their action.

This illegal attempt to overthrow Government and terrorize NCR residents and businesses will forever be remembered as Canada’s January 6th moment, a well-known time in USA history.
    Congratulations on Job well done!
    Dr A.L. Vallerand. Alberta
