Rogers data breach overview:
- Who: Attackers have posted an advertisement for Active Directory databases stolen from Rogers Communications during a 2022 data breach.
- Why: Rogers previously confirmed the data breach and that some information stolen during the cyber attack has shown up on the dark web.
- Where: Rogers Communications is a Canadian telecommunications company.
Information stolen from Canadian telecommunications company Rogers Communications in a data breach last year has reportedly been put up for sale on a mostly Russian-speaking hacker forum.
The data breach, which was previously confirmed by Rogers, compromised both customer and employee information and includes three of the company’s Active Directory databases, reports CyberNews.
The cyber attackers have now placed an advertisement on a hacking forum that purports to be selling data stolen from the Rogers’ Active Directory databases, including ones pertaining to its users, groups, and devices.
Rogers has confirmed that some information stolen during the data breach has appeared on the dark web, but that only employee data is included in the leaked databases, with customers not impacted, reports CyberNews.
Data samples included in the attackers advertisement, however, reportedly include customer names and surnames, phone numbers, email addresses, company names, locations, user roles, and account launch dates, among other things.
Employee data is reportedly not included in the sample data provided by the attackers, however CyberNews believes the Active Directory databases could host information on employees that use the company’s network resources.
The attackers are reportedly asking for $14,000 in return for the stolen Rogers’ databases. The advertisement did not include information on the size of the databases or the number of users exposed, reports CyberNews.
Attacker claims they hacked Rogers days before major outage in July of last year
The data breach occurred around the same time Rogers experienced an outage in July 2022 that forced 12 million of its customers offline and prompted an inquiry by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications commission, reports CyberNews.
Weeks after the outage, an individual reportedly claimed they had hacked Rogers days before the outage occurred.
A class action lawsuit was ultimately filed against Rogers in July 2022 by a customer claiming the company was negligent by allegedly allowing a major network failure to occur between July 8-9 of last year.
The customer argued the Rogers outage disrupted communication, payments, and access to emergency services.
