The Archdiocese of Montreal has agreed to pay at least $14.7 million to compensate around 60 victims of sexual abuse perpetrated by priests and lay employees within the archdiocese.

Victims will each receive an estimated $10,000 as part of the class action settlement, with the amount of compensation calculated based on the consequences the assault caused, rather than the acts that were committed, reports the CBC

The settlement resolves claims of sexual abuse against around 30 priests in the Montreal archdiocese, with a list of the accused priests reportedly set to be published in the weeks ahead.

The archdiocese said it hopes the court approves the settlement and “that it will allow the victims to continue the difficult healing process more serenely,” reports the CBC.

Montreal firm, Arsenault Dufresne Wee Avocats, which represented the Montreal archdiocese sexual abuse victims, will now reportedly be responsible for launching an appeal on behalf of victims who have not contacted it yet.

The firm is urging sexual abuse victims to contact them, noting that registration is both free and confidential, and, in the event more than 123 victims decide to register, negotiations will reopen with the diocese to increase the total compensation amount, reports the CBC.

Additional sex abuse victims have around three months to come forward, register for class action

The class action lawsuit was originally filed against the Archdiocese of Montreal in 2019. Victims who want to register will reportedly have around three more months to come forward.

Brian Boucher, a former Archdiocese of Montreal priests named in the class action lawsuit, has already been sentenced to eight years in prison in 2019 after being convicted of sexual assault against two minors, reports the CBC.

A federal judge in Delaware upheld a $2.46 billion settlement earlier this month that was made by the Boy Scout’s of America to resolve more than 80,000 claims — spanning decades — of sexual abuse within the youth organization.
