The Laundress recalled about 800,000 fabric conditioners as the products may contain a carcinogen that can cause adverse health effects.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website published the recall March 31. It applies to about 800,000 fabric conditioner products sold under The Laundress brand, a complete list of which is available here.
The Laundress originally recalled about 730,000 of the 800,000 products Dec. 1, 2022, the recall notice states. It sold an additional 13,000 units in Canada.
According to the recall, the fabric conditioners can contain a chemical impurity, ethylene oxide, a carcinogen that can cause adverse health effects if there is significant and direct long-term exposure. No injuries have been reported so far, the company says.
The Laundress is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.
Stop using product immediately, fabric conditioner recall says
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled fabric conditioners and contact The Laundress for instructions to receive a full refund.
Consumers who have previously requested a refund for these products in response to The Laundress’ December 2022 recall and reimbursement program should not submit a new request. For more information about how to submit for a refund, click here.
After requesting a refund, consumers should dispose of the product by closing the bottle tightly and placing it in household trash. Do not empty the fabric conditioner prior to disposal, the recall states.
The Laundress sold the products online at TheLaundress.com, Amazon.com and additional websites and in stores at The Laundress, Bloomingdale’s, The Container Store, Saks Fifth Avenue, Target, Nordstrom, Jenni Kayne, Kith, Peruvian Connection, N.Peal, Brooklinen and other major retailers nationwide from 2011 through November 2022 for between $1 and $20.
In related news, a recent lawsuit claims a child died following exposure to The Laundress products contaminated by bacteria.
