- Why: The irons can pose a fire, burn and shock hazard.
- Where: The Steamfast iron recall is active in the United States and Canada.
Vornado has issued a recall of more than 300,000 dual-voltage Steamfast brand Home and Away Travel Steam Irons as the irons can pose a shock hazard.
The recall was published on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website April 27. It applies to about 317,000 Steamfast Home & Away Travel Steam Irons and Brookstone Steam Bug Travel Steam Irons in the United States, and about 5,000 in Canada.
According to the recall, the power cord can become damaged near the cord bushing, which can lead to overheating of the cord, posing fire and burn hazards.
“In addition, cord damage near the bushing can result in exposed copper wires, posing a shock hazard,” the recall states.
So far, Vornado has received 50 reports of incidents, including 38 reports of the iron’s power cord smoking, sparking, burning or other signs of overheating and 12 reports of cord damage.
No injuries have been reported so far, the company said. It is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
Immediately stop using the recalled irons
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled irons and visit the Steamfast or Vornado website to register for the recall and receive a refund of $19.99, the recall states.
The recalled irons were sold at Walmart, Bed Bath & Beyond and other stores nationwide and online at Amazon.com, Vornado.com, Steamfast.com and other online retailers from January 2009 through May 2018. The Brookstone iron was sold between 2009 and 2013 for between $13 and $30.
The recall involves dual voltage Steamfast brand Home and Away Travel Steam Irons with model numbers SF-717, SF-720 and SF-727 and Brookstone Steam Bug Travel Steam Irons with model number 606335.
Other steamers have been recalled in the past.
My Little Steamer and My Little Steamer Go Mini, both sold on the Home Shopping Network (HSN) channel, were recalled over reports they leaked boiling water, burning consumers.
Consumers who purchased one of the recalled My Little Steamer models may be eligible to claim compensation thanks to a class action settlement.
