Bissell has recalled more than 65,000 of its cordless vacuums in the United States and Canada as the products can overheat, posing a fire hazard.
The recall was posted to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commision (CPSC) website on Jan. 12 and applies to Bissell Cordless Multi-Surface Wet Dry Vacuums in Models 2551, 2551W and 25519. The model numbers are visible when the clean water tank is removed
According to the recall notice, the circuit board inside the vacuum’s battery pack can overheat and smoke, potentially starting a fire.
About 61,000 of the vacuums are being recalled in the United States, and about 4,300 in Canada.
Bissell has received 66 reports of the vacuum smoking, one injury
The recall comes after Bissell received 66 reports of the vacuum smoking and emitting a burning odor.
That included five reports of the battery pack catching on fire, three of which resulted in minor property damage and one resulting in a burn injury, the company said.
The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled vacuums and contact BISSELL for a free battery pack replacement, the recall states.
Consumers can either take the product to a local BISSELL authorized service center for a free battery pack replacement or schedule a free in-home repair visit from an authorized BISSELL service technician to replace the existing battery pack.
The affected products were sold at Walmart stores nationwide and online at www.bissell.com, www.walmart.com, www.qvc.com, www.amazon.com, www.costco.com, www.fingerhut.com, www.acehardware.com, www.kohls.com, and www.wayfair.com from January 2019 through November 2022 for about $360.
Meanwhile, in March last year, an Illinois resident filed a class action lawsuit against iRobot Corporation, which manufactures and sells the Roomba Vacuum, for an alleged wheel defect in the vacuums that renders the product useless.

Everytime I used it I could smell burning wires. So I stopped using it
