- Where: The amendments will affect consumers throughout Canada.
The Government of Canada announced it will amend its Transportation Information Regulations to increase supply chain transparency and help consumers better grasp the performance of the country’s rail sector.
The Honourable Omar Alghabra, Canada’s minister of transport, announced the regulation amendments with the changes set to take effect on April 4, according to the Government of Canada.
Canada says it will begin to require major railways to provide Transport Canada with “enhanced service and performance information” that will “significantly enhance the value of the information being collected.”
The Government of Canada’s Transportation Data and Information Hub will publish Canada rail data each week to give Canadians “a better picture of end-to-end freight rail performance,” according to the government.
Major railways must give Transport Canada more data supporting targeted public policy
Major railways must now give Transport Canada more data supporting “targeted public policy and other regulatory purposes,” including traffic data and waybill information.
Alghabra called the movement of Canadian goods “vital” to the country’s “future economic success” while saying the new amendments reflect “our commitment to strengthening Canada’s supply chain and improving our economy.”
“Ensuring access to detailed service and performance information for Canada’s railway sector is another way we are contributing to building even more productive exchanges among supply chain members,” Alghabra says in a statement.
Canada also says it expects the new amendments to “significantly expand upon the service and performance data” that it currently collects since it implemented the Transportation Modernization Act in 2018.
“The amendments to the Transportation Information Regulations are an important part of the Government of Canada’s response to the issues raised in the National Supply Chain Task Force’s Final Report,” Alghabra says.
In related rail news, consumers in Canada were potentially impacted by a data breach disclosed by Wabtec Corporation earlier this month that the company said exposed the private and personal information of some individuals.
