Woom Bikes announced a recall for more than 84,000 kids’ bikes as the bikes’ stem and handlebar can detach, posing an injury risk.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website published the recall July 6. It applies to about 84,000 Woom Original 2018-2021 model bikes sold in the United States and about 533 sold in Canada.
According to the bike recall, the stem and handlebar on the bikes can detach and cause riders to lose control, posing a fall hazard.
So far, Woom says it received 77 reports of the handlebar stem detaching or loosening, resulting in 19 injuries involving bruising, cuts or abrasions.
The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
Stop using bikes, contact Woom for free repair kit, recall states
Woom sold the recalled products at woom.com, amazon.com and select local bicycle stores nationwide from September 2018 through March 2022 for between $200 and $530, according to the recall notice.
The company advises consumers to stop using the recalled bicycles and contact woom for a free repair kit. Woom Bikes USA is contacting all known purchasers directly, it says.
The bikes are designed for children between 18 months and 14 years. They were sold in six versions: Woom 1, Woom 1 Plus, Woom 2, Woom 3, Woom 4, Woom 5 and Woom 6. The Woom 1 and Woom 1 Plus are balance bikes; Woom 2-6 are pedal bikes. The bikes all have “Woom” in white letters on the sides of the downtube.
Bike recalls occur quite often.
On June 23, Trek announced a recall for more than 96,000 bicycles as they have a brake hose that can detach, posing a crash hazard.
