Coinsquare data breach overview:

  • Who: Coinsquare disclosed to its customers that it may have suffered a data breach last week.
  • Why: The data breach may have exposed personal information such as names, email addresses, and account balances, among other things.
  • Where: Coinsquare is one of Canada’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges.

Canadian cryptocurrency exchange Coinsquare revealed that it may have suffered a data breach, while reportedly reassuring its customers that their assets were “secure” and “not at risk.”

Coinsquare emailed its customers last week to let them know that it may have suffered a data breach after determining that an unauthorized third party had gained access to a customer database, reports CoinDesk

The customer database reportedly contained personal information such as customer names, email addresses, phone numbers, birthdates, account balances, transaction history, device IDs, and public wallet addresses.

Coinsquare told its customers that it discovered the potential data breach last week and initially disclosed it via its Twitter account, reports CoinDesk.

Coinquare customers reassured that no passwords were exposed

Customers were reportedly reassured in their emails from Coinsquare that no passwords had been exposed and that there was no evidence any of the potentially compromised information had actually been viewed by the bad actor.

Coinsquare chose to suspend activity on its platform after discovering the potential data breach, with the stoppage triggering suspicion that the company was possibly dealing with liquidity issues, reports CoinDesk.

A class action lawsuit was filed against cryptocurrency exchanges Wealthsimple and Shakepay last month by a consumer arguing the companies charged customers millions of dollars in hidden fees.
