LG refrigerator compressor defect class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: John Prins filed a class action lawsuit against LG Electronics Canada, Inc.
  • Why: Prins claims LG manufacturers and sells refrigerators containing defective linear compressors which prevent them from being able to keep food cool or frozen.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.

LG Electronics Canada manufactures and sells refrigerators containing defective linear compressors which are prone to failing and keeping the units from being able to cool or freeze food, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff John Prins claims he was not made aware of any defect when he purchased the LG refrigerator and that the company failed to address the issue when he presented it to them in a timely manner, injuring him financially.

Prins claims he would not have purchased or paid a “premium price” for the LG refrigerator had he known it contained the alleged compressor defect.

“The Plaintiff chose the Defendant’s product in part because he understood the Defendant’s refrigerators to be reliable, fully functional, high-quality, and designed with premium features,” states the LG refrigerator class action.

Prins says the LG refrigerator he purchased came with a manufacturers warranty which purported to cover certain defects, however, it took more than three weeks for LG to repair his refrigerator and cost him around $274 for labour repair costs.

LG accused of lagging on fixing alleged compressor defect

During this time, Prins argues he was forced to buy food daily—including pricier ready made meals—throw food away and was unable to keep leftovers, in addition to having to purchase a secondhand mini-fridge.

Prins wants to represent a Class of all Canadian residents who purchased an LG refrigerator not for resale from LG or an authorised retailer since Jan. 30, 2014.

Prins claims LG is guilty of unjust enrichment, breach of contract, negligence, and negligent misrepresentation, and in violation of the Sale of Goods Act, Competition Act, and the Consumer Protection Act, 2002

Plaintiff is requesting pecuniary, special, punitive, aggravated, and exemplary damages for himself and all Class Members.

Home appliance company Electrolux recalled certain Frigidaire and Electrolux side-by-side, top freezer and multi-door refrigerators over concerns their ice-level arm detectors could break into pieces and drop into the unit’s ice bucket.

Also last month, Hisense issued a recall for its refrigerators built with french doors over concerns the doors could detach when being opened, injuring consumers.

  1. Peter Snow says:

LG should pay for the damage they have caused. My bottom freezer refrigerator just failed. I have 4 LG appliances.
Hope the other appliances are trouble free! If they do not fix the problem it will be hard to sell their appliances in the future.

  2. Marlene Ross says:

We purchased an LG French door counter depth refrigerator from Sears on June 16, 2018 and received it in July. Tomorrow we will get our fourth compressor installed. The last compressor was installed ten weeks ago and stopped working last week. Hundreds of dollars in food ruined. I want to file a class action law suit. It has cost us a $1,000 so far in labor alone. It’s ridiculous. How can I get in on the class action.

  3. Christianne Chatel Smith says:

Wow, didn’t expect this from lg. All food thawed. Told it was probably compresser. They suggested I purchase a 400$ out of warranty, which would be cheaper then just paying for labour since compresser is covered under warranty. Bought in 2019. Sad.

  4. Naomi says:

Bought our LG fridge 2020. I was unaware of a compressor issue. Our fridge stopped working and we had to throw out all our food. Lg said it sounds like the compressor is not working. No one in our town works with LG appliances to fix the issue. They want us to drive over 4 hours away to their repair center where it will cost $480 just for labour and it will not be done in one day we would have to make another trip. This is not possible. We paid almost $3,000 for this fridge and it’s a lemon.

  5. Samantha Paasche says:

Our fridge was manufactured in July 2021 (we purchased it October 2021). Now March 2023 it is already not working due to the compressor. We live in a remote area and brining it in for repairs is really difficult, but they refuse to cover the cost of the compressor (even though it is under warranty) if the technician who makes the repairs is not from an LG certified service centre to . I am beyond furious to find out this is a known issue for LG fridges.

Same problem here. Purchased our fridge Dec of 2017. Had to bring it to a local unauthorized LG repair shop to find out the trouble was the compressor. Just over 5 years in, not good. The LG authorized technician is 700kms away. They will not even supply me a new compressor for the local technician to repair. It will also void my warranty too, apparently. Very disappointed. Not easy to come up with another $3000 after 5 years. Terrible!!

  6. Ron Belanger says:

I bought the LFNS22250W French door fridge in August 2019 and the compressor stopped working in Feb 2023. I came home to thawed freezer and had to throw out several expensive meats. I called 5 or 6 appliance service companies and when they ask the model, I told them LG. They quickly responded we don’t repair that manufacturer. I called Lg and they said they don’t have anyone in the local area to repair the fridge.

    What a complete nightmare!

  7. Sydney Gatenby says:

Bought the LG French Door bottom freezer in 2021 while doing a kitchen renovation. All our appliances before (washer, dryer, stove) were LG and lasted well with no repair calls. Almost immediately the freezer appeared to be stuck in a defrost mode and then it would start up again until finally it quit. Called for service and because of the area we live in service to that area is once a week. Out comes the service man and verifies the compressor is gone and they would order it in for next week which turns into a month because there is a back order on parts and turns into another week because the day he is supposed to come out to our area he has a family event. Install is done and he assures us that this a new model compressor and that just incase he has also replaced the mother board. That compressor lasted about a year and started however right from the installation every once in a while the food would appear to softening in the freezer but not totally thawing. A call for the service person to come out again and he comes out and tells my wife (as I am not home) that this is normal because the freezer is working “that day”. About 3 months later I ask for some ice cream on my apple pie and the ice cream is almost totally melted – call in for service and as per the usual the service day is the following week and out comes the service man. He is there for 10 minutes and goes out to the truck and grabs another compressor and replaces the failed one and reprograms the mother board. So now we are working on our third compressor and of course he assures me that this is a new generation of compressor and this should cure the problem – stop me if anyone has heard this before.
As for the extended warranty – it does offer a $250.00 food reimbursement however that is a one time thing for the entire length of the contract – h’mmm did I mention this is the third compressor?
I thought when I bought this fridge I was told if there were 5 visits it would be determined it was a lemon and be replaced. As it appear now we have five fridges on the property and this is the newest one and the only one to have required a service call – not just one but five. Without an extended warranty this is a throw away fridge after the warranty expires. BUILT IN OBSOLESCENCE!!!

  8. Sandy Cairns says:

I purchased five LG appliances in October 2018, plus a LG Gram laptop. This week my dryer started making noises, and two days later I opened my freezer after a shopping trip only to find that everything in my freezer was thawed out. I phoned LG and was told the dryer only had a 1 yr warranty, and my refrigerator had a 10 yr warranty on the compressor, but not labour. The labour alone I was told, would basically be half the cost of buying a new one. I am so disappointed that a top name brand would sell defective appliances. After four yrs I shouldn’t be buying replacements.

  9. Tom says:

Same issue here. Purchased refrigerator Sept 2019, failed in Feb 2023. Paid $90 to have a tech come and tell me the compressor had failed. He told me about a lawsuit that found LG liable for damages, and that they should replace for free, parts & labour. He had other customers that were successful in that, but it appears the lawsuit was in the US only. I’m currently fighting with LG to cover the labour.

Wouldn’t it be nice if the company actually acted ethically? They have a known problem that was proven in US courts. Instead of doing the right thing, and taking care of customers in other countries, and potentially generating a bunch of customer loyalty, they are instead trying to screw anyone they can. I’ll never but another LG product.

  10. Carissa says:

I’m experiencing the same thing. I bought an LG French door refrigerator April 2021 and on Jan 14 2023 it suddenly stopped cooling. It is a model LRFNS2200D. We did all the troubleshooting and then called LG. They said the compressor is covered, but we’d have to pay for the repair service and offered a $350 CAD flat fee (through lgoutofwarranty.ca). I had to wait until Monday to speak to the technician, who quoted me $365 CAD. Since it was a *tiny bit* cheaper, I booked through the LGs website and the technician called me back saying they got my request but wouldn’t be able to repair it until next week at the earliest because they are swamped with other refrigerator repairs. I’ve lost almost all of my food and I’m keeping what’s left in a cooler on the balcony. I’ve been trying not to spend extra money on new food everyday and eat what we have, but it’s making me ill. I was really disappointed that they are charging nearly $400 after taxes to fix this, and they won’t even fix it in a timely manner.
