A class action settlement against Huawei Canada compensates Nexus 6P phone owners for defective cellphone batteries.
The class action settlement benefits individuals who own or owned a Nexus 6P cellphone purchased in Quebec.
Nexus phones were the precursor to Google’s Pixel and Pixel XL products. The Nexus 6P was a Huawei-made phone the company touted as having high quality performance and an elegant design. However, these phones may have also come with defective batteries.
According to a Nexus class action lawsuit, Nexus 6P phones are prone to premature battery draining problems. Only a year and a half after purchasing a Nexus 6P, the plaintiff in the case allegedly experienced battery discharge.
Battery discharge occurs when a phone shuts down due to insufficient battery despite the display showing 30% or 40% battery power remaining. Repairing this issue could cost hundreds of dollars, the Nexus class action lawsuit contends.
The Nexus 6P class action lawsuit contends that Huawei equipped Nexus 6P phones with defective batteries despite Google advertising the phone as having a long battery life due to Huawei’s 3450 mAh batteries.
Huawei and Google haven’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to resolve these allegations with a $550,000 class action settlement.
Under the terms of the settlement, Class Members can either collect a cash payment or have their defective battery replaced by Huawei.
The first claims period ended April 11, 2022. However, because money remained in the settlement fund, a second claims period has opened.
Class Members who purchased Nexus 6P phones but did not experience battery issues could receive cash payments of $10.
Those who can prove their cellphone battery is suffering from premature discharging could receive up to $500 from the Nexus 6P settlement.
Class members had the alternative option of contacting Huawei and having their phone battery replaced. The deadline to take that action was May 3, 2022.
In order to receive a payment from the Nexus 6P settlement, class members must submit a valid claim for by Aug. 17, 2022. Claims must include proof they own or owned a Nexus 6P phone, such as a receipt or invoice of their purchase or a photo or screenshot of their cellphone showing the phone’s International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number.
