Dollarama agreed to a class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims it charged illegal environmental handling fees on certain products.

The Dollarama settlement benefits consumers who purchased a product subject to environmental handling fees from Dollarama in Quebec between Dec. 11, 2019, and July 4, 2023, or elsewhere in Canada between May 29, 2021, and July 4, 2023.

Plaintiffs in the Dollarama ecofees class action lawsuit claim the retailer charged illegal environmental handling fees on certain products without properly disclosing these fees. Although these fees are not inherently illegal, Dollarama allegedly charged higher fees than those allowed by Canadian laws.

Dollarama is a Canadian dollar store chain that sells a variety of products, including food, home goods, party supplies and more.

The company hasnโ€™t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay an undisclosed sum to resolve the class action lawsuit.

Under the terms of the Dollarama settlement, class members can receive a cash payment. Each claimant is estimated to receive $3-$10. Class members are only eligible to receive one payment regardless of how many products they purchased that were subject to environmental handling fees.

Exact payment amounts will vary depending on the number of claims filed with the settlement. If the number of approved claims results in payments of less than $3 each, no payments will be made and the settlement fund will be donated to court-approved charities.

The deadline for opt-out was Nov. 22, 2024. The deadline for objection was Nov. 26, 2024.ย

The final approval hearing for the Dollarama ecofees settlement was scheduled for Dec. 2, 2024.

To receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by Feb. 14, 2025.
