Nissan agreed to reimburse repairs and extend warranties as part of a defective continuously variable transmission, or CVT, class action lawsuit settlement.

The settlement benefits owners and lessees of certain Nissan vehicles in Canada, excluding Quebec, as of Dec. 3, 2021. The settlement covers the following vehicles:

  • 2013-2016 Nissan Altima
  • 2013-2017 Nissan Juke
  • 2013-2017 Nissan Sentra
  • 2012-2014 Nissan Versa
  • 2014-2017 Nissan Versa Note

Although Nissan is a generally reliable car brand, Nissan vehicles have been plagued by transmission concerns. Some experts say repeated scandals about transmission failure and “limp mode” make Nissan transmissions the worst ever made.

Consumers have agreed, taking legal action against Nissan in a class action lawsuit alleging that the company’s vehicles are equipped with defective CVTs. The CVTs in Nissan vehicles allegedly suffer from poor performance and can even fail entirely.

Transmission repairs for these vehicles are costly, Nissan customers contend. The Nissan class action lawsuit argues owners and lessees shouldn’t be forced to pay out of pocket to repair an issue Nissan is allegedly well aware of.

Nissan hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to resolve these allegations with a class action settlement.

Under the terms of the Nissan CVT settlement, class members can receive reimbursements for repairs or purchase vouchers along with an extended warranty.

Settlement reimbursements will compensate class members for replacements and repairs done to the transmission assembly or automatic transmission control units in class vehicles within 84 months or 140,000 kilometers of service.

Repairs done by an authorized Nissan dealer will be reimbursed in full. Repairs done by a non-Nissan repair shop will only be reimbursed up to $6,000.

Former owners of class vehicles who needed two or more repairs or replacements on their vehicles can receive a voucher to be used towards the purchase of a new Nissan or Infiniti vehicle. Vouchers are worth $1,300 and must be used by March 15, 2023.

Class members can receive either reimbursements or a voucher to be used towards the purchase of a new vehicle, but cannot receive both benefits.

The warranty extension applies to all class vehicles. This part of the settlement extends Nissan’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty — specifically how this warranty covers transmission assembly and automatic transmission control units. Under the terms of the extended warranty, repairs related to these items will be covered for 24 months or 40,000 kilometers.

The effective date of this settlement was April 30, 2022.

In order to receive benefits from the Nissan CVT settlement, class members must submit a valid claim form by Sept. 13, 2022.

10 thoughts onNissan CVT defect class action settlement

  1. Arthur castellanos says:

I always trusted Japanese auto makers. The transmission on my Altima was rebuilt with 70k miles on it now with 77k miles on it , it went bad. I have a bill from aamco for $6000 in repairs. I wish I could reach out to all consumers and alert them to stay away from Nissan altogether. They will not even honor the court settlement

  2. john says:

I have a 2014 rogue and cvt failed its at the nizzan dealer now going to cost 6500.00 and i still owe money on the suv.

  3. Pattie Williams says:

That’s sad I have 2017 Nissan Altima cvt transmission went out and can’t afford to fix I’ll never buy another Nissan again ever

    1. Jarid says:

You should be covered under the warranty extension. It’s a known fault of Nissan. I nearly had a tragic accident due to it. They should recall these cars.

  4. Vicky T says:

The lawsuit included Rogue’s. I filed a claim. Why am I not getting a reimbursement for my Rogue. I had a 2008 Do the same thing so that’s why I bought a 2015 rogue and then had to replace the transmission/CVT why am I not getting reimbursed for what I paid. Why have I still out all the forms and claims if you weren’t going to reimburse us.

  5. Wai says:

Nissan rogue also has that problem and why not included?

  6. Mike says:

My wife’s 2017 Rogue CVT failed at 114000 km. Nissan Canada did not help her. I had it repaired and it failed after one week. It is now again in the transmission shop. It’s become a nightmare. These vehicles should have been included in the law suit much like the USA

    1. Alyssa says:

My 2019 Nissan Qashqais cvt failed at 105000. I went through customer care and they refused to help.
They have replaced my rad fan, the new one was broken, they replaced again. Same issues happened over the year, brought it back in. They said it’s cvt.
Today my engine light came on and my fan is not working.
Nissan is terrible! And terrible customer service.

  7. Dominic ricci says:

Why other Nissan vehicles are not included like the Rouge

  8. Edward S Biggs says:

The 2016 Nissan Rogue cvt is just as unreliable but not included in nsettlement.
