- Why: The Bissell vacuums’ battery packs can overheat and lead to a fire.
- Where: The Bissell recall is effective across the United States and Canada.
Bissell is recalling nearly 160,000 of its Multi Reach Hand and Floor Vacuum Cleaners due to a fire risk with the product’s lithium-ion batteries.
The Bissell recall includes models 1985, 19851 (also called Multi Auto), 19859, 1985T, 2151, 21512, 21513, 21517, 21518, 21519, 2151A, 2151T, 2151W and 2151V. About 142,000 of the recalled vacuum cleaners were sold in the United States, and another approximately 14,600 were sold in Canada.
The Bissell vacuums have their model numbers printed on the product rating label behind the dirt tank. The Bissell recall advises customers to stop using the vacuums immediately and contact the company for instructions on how to deplete the defective batteries and receive a free replacement vacuum.
The Bissell vacuums affected by the recall were sold at brick-and-mortar stores and online retailers between August 2016 and December 2022, at prices ranging from $110 to $270.
Bissell asks customers not to throw away the recalled batteries or deposit them in used battery recycling boxes at home improvement stories. The company advises customers to dispose of the batteries in a manner consistent with state and local laws in their area.
Recalled batteries linked 17 reports of smoking/burning, including 6 fires
Bissell says it has received 17 reports of the recalled vacuum cleaners smoking and emitting a burning odor; in six of those cases, the battery packs reportedly caught fire. Three of the battery pack fires led to property damage and two resulted in minor burn injuries.
The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
Bissell can be reached at 855-417-7001 between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, and between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. ET on Saturdays. The company can also be contacted regarding the recall via email at RecallNA@bissell.com or on its website.
Bissell also recalled 2,000 of its Wet Dry Vacuums last April because the circuit boards inside the product’s battery pack can overheat and smoke, creating a fire hazard.
