Beef jerky regarding the safety recall

A series of safety recalls have been issued, including several affecting meat products over contamination concerns and ceiling fans that had blades fly off while in use. Check your homes for these recalled products.

Bison and Beef Jerky Contaminated With THC

The government of Yukon reported that a local meat company, Off the Hook Meatworks, voluntarily recalled its products after reports that consumers were suffering from physical and mental problems after consumption.

“The product has possibly been contaminated with a foreign material that may be a health hazard,” warned the government website on Dec. 30, 2020, noting that consumers complained of dizziness, accelerated heart rates, numbness, difficulty walking, and nausea after consuming the jerky.

According to Narcity, the RCMP is investigating after several individuals complained after eating Off the Hook beef or bison jerky. These individuals were tested at the hospital and traces of THC were reportedly found. Consumers who have eaten Off the Hook beef or bison jerky and subsequently felt unwell are encouraged to contact the RCMP or Yukon Environmental Health.

The government of Yukon warns consumers not to eat any of the potentially contaminated Off the Hook beef or bison jerky and to avoid handling it.

“Carefully place all the food in a sealable container (even if it’s half-eaten,),” advise health authorities. “Close the container. Write ‘DO NOT EAT’ on the container.” Additionally, the jerky should not be fed to animals.

Those who have consumed the products and feel ill should seek medical attention as soon as possible. Recalled products have reportedly been pulled from store shelves.

Deli Meats Recalled Over Listeria Concerns

A number of deli meat products have been recently recalled due to a Listeria contamination.

Narcity reports that an initial recall warning was issued on Dec. 15, 2020. This recall affected several brands of deli meats, including The Deli Shop, Compliments, and Levitts, distributed in the provinces of Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, and Nova Scotia.

A few days later, the recall was reportedly expanded to include deli meats sold under the Assala band.

The recalled deli meats include corned beef, Montreal smoked meat and pastrami. At least one consumer reported becoming sick after eating the recalled deli meat, according to Narcity.

According to Health Canada, Listeria can cause a severe reaction in the nervous system, as well as headache, fever, nausea, vomiting, and cramps. Recalled deli meats should be discarded or returned to the store where they were purchased.

Ceiling Fan Safety Recalls

Health Canada has also issued notices for a pair of ceiling fans.

The Hampton Bay Mara brand 54-inch ceiling fans have been recalled over a safety concern. According to the Health Canada notice, the blades in the fans can come loose and fly off during use, potentially injuring consumers.

The recall was issued after the manufacturer, King of Fans, received nearly 50 reports of blades detaching. In two instances, the falling blades hit consumers. No reports of concerns have been made in Canada; however, a number of consumers reported issues in the United States.

The fans were sold in matte white and matte black colours. More than 5,000 units were sold in Canada between May and October of 2020.

Consumers with Hampton Bay Mara fans affected by the recall should stop using the product, warns Health Canada. Consumers can contact King of Fans for instructions about how to identify whether their fan has an issue, along with information about a replacement or a refund.

Westinghouse indoor ceiling fans have also been the subject of a recall notice. According to Health Canada, these fans do not meet mandated safety requirements. Fortunately, no reports of incidents or injuries have been reported in Canada.

According to the notice, the recall affects several models and sizes of Westinghouse fans, though only 51 recalled fans were sold in Canada. Information to identify whether a fan is included in the recall can be found on the label attached to the motor housing of the fans. The recalled fans were sold by Wayfair between April and August of 2020.

Health Canada says that consumers should stop using the product and contact Wayfair.ca for a refund.

According to Health Canada, recalled products cannot be resold or distributed.

“Health Canada would like to remind Canadians to report any health or safety incidents related to the use of this product or any other consumer product or cosmetic by filling out the Consumer Product Incident Report Form,” notes the agency on its website.
