Smucker Foods of Canada Corp. recalled eleven different types of Jif brand peanut butter in Canada after an outbreak of salmonella infections linked to peanut butter in the United States.

Jif Peanut Butter Canadian Recall Prompted by U.S. Recall, Salmonella Outbreak

The recall comes amid a multistate outbreak of salmonella senftenberg infections in the United States linked to certain Jif peanut butter products produced at the J.M. Smucker Company facility in Lexington, Kentucky.

Jif issued the recall May 20, and the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) website posted a federal and state health authority investigation notice of the salmonella outbreak.

So far, consumers have reported 14 illnesses, as well as two hospitalizations, that are potentially related to the peanut butter. In Canada, there have been no known illnesses so far.

Health authorities advise consumers to check to see if they have the recalled products in their homes or establishments, according to the recall notice.

“Do not consume the recalled products. Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased,” the notice says.

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Food Contaminated With Salmonella Can Cause Deadly Infections

Food contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick, health authorities say.

Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections.

Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea, the recall notice says. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.
