Strauss Elite Salmonella Recall Overview:

  • Who: Foodfest International 2000 Inc. is recalling various Elite brand candy, confectionery, snacks and sweetener products.
  • Why: The products may be contaminated with salmonella.
  • Where: The recall is nationwide.

The Canadian government is recalling almost 100 Elite brand confectionery products due to possible salmonella contamination, prompted by major recalls worldwide.

The government issued a recall notice April 29 for 97 Elite brand candy, confectionery, snacks and sweetener products that may be impacted. The exact products and codes can be found here.

The company recalling Elite brand products in Canada is Foodfest International 2000 Inc. However, the recall traces back to Israeli manufacturer Strauss Israel.

This recall was triggered by alerts in another country, the notice said. It comes after two major recalls were recently issued in the United States and the UK.

In the United States, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration announced that Strauss Israel was recalling 101 different Elite-branded products due to possible presence of salmonella, including chocolate, cakes, wafers, energy grain snacks, energy chocolate rice cakes, chewing gum and toffee candies.

In the UK, products sold under the brands Elite Chocolate, Elite Rice Cakes, Elite Toffees, Elite Cakes & Wafers and Elite Must Gum were being recalled.

Elite Recall Advises Consumers Not To Consume The Products

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the products in Canada so far, the recall says.

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

The recalled products were sold nationally in Canada, and the label information may appear in English or Hebrew.

The government is advising consumers to check if they have the products, and, if they do, throw them out or return them to the place of purchase.

“Do not consume recalled products,” the recall notice states. “If you think you became sick from consuming a recalled product, call your doctor.”

The recall has been massive overseas. Israel’s Health Ministry Director-General Nachman Ash announced that Strauss Group’s Elite factory in Nof Hagalil would be shut down for the next three months as the company investigates the salmonella contamination, according to The Times of Israel.
