Grainworks Poppy Seeds Recall Issued Following Inspection
The poppy seeds recall was reportedly triggered following a food safety inspection by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
The industry subsequently announced a recall of various poppy seeds from the market over concerns that they may be contaminated with salmonella. Foods that are contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell any different than non-contaminated foods. However, people who consume food contaminated with salmonella may become sick.
Young children, elderly people, pregnant women and individuals with weakened immune systems who consume salmonella bacteria may develop serious and potentially deadly infections.
Salmonella symptoms may include fever, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, headache and nausea.
Consumers who purchased any of the recalled poppy seeds should either throw them out or return them to the store from which they were purchased.
Similarly, a recall was recently issued over salmonella concerns in some sesame seeds and pistachios sold in Alberta. The recall, announced in November 2021, included white sesame seeds and Alburj brand Halawa Pistachio Extra products.
The salmonella contamination recall was nationwide.
