Naos Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water Makeup Remover Recall Overview:

  • Who: Naos is recalling 6,270 units of its Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar water makeup remover.
  • Why: The makeup remover may contain a microorganism that can cause pimples and conjunctivitis.
  • Where: The recall is effective nationwide in Canada.

Naos is recalling 6,270 units of its Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar water makeup remover sold nationwide at Shoppers Drug Mart due to a microbial hazard that can cause pimples and conjunctivitis.

According to a recall notice posted by Health Canada, the makeup removers could contain a common microorganism called Serratia marcescens, which, although rarely causing severe infections in healthy individuals, can cause skin infection (pimples) or an eye infection (conjunctivitis) in the event of accidental contact with eyes.

The infections typically affect those who have a weakened immune system or other conditions, such as a very recent surgery, the notice says.

As of Feb. 25, 2022, Naos says it has received no reports of incidents or injuries in Canada.

Law Prohibits Sale of Hazardous, Unsanitary Cosmetics

This recall is for Bioderma Sensibio H20 micellar water makeup remover in the 850 ml size with the UPC 774665181779 and lot number 22414H. The UPC code is written on the white barcode label on the back of the bottle, and the lot number is engraved on the bottom of the bottle.

Health Canada noted that in addition to the requirements of the Cosmetic Regulations, the Food and Drugs Act (FDA) prohibits the sale of cosmetics that are either made with hazardous substances or under unsanitary conditions to users in Canada.

Health Canada says consumers should immediately stop using the recalled products. Naos says on the Bioderma website that consumers can return the recalled makeup remover to their local Shoppers Drug Mart for a full refund. The company adds that the recall “is an isolated incident.”

“No other product [formats or lots] of the SENSIBIO H2O product line or the BIODERMA brand are affected by this measure,” the company says. “The health of our consumers is our primary concern. To ensure the quality requirements of our Product, and out of an abundance of caution, we are proceeding with the withdrawal and voluntary recall of all the units of Product in this lot.

Naos says that it imposes “alert specifications that are 10 times lower than what is required by the regulations,” adding that quality is rigorously controlled. It apologises for the recall and says it has “immediately put in place corrective actions to prevent this from happening again.”

In 2020, Neutrogena was hit with a class action lawsuit by customers who said that a range of Neutrogena cleansing towelette products can cause burns, rashes and peeling skin. According to the lead plaintiff in the case, Neutrogena had misrepresented these products as safe and denied assertions that the product can cause skin problems.

Neutrogena’s parent company Johnson & Johnson argued to have the suit dismissed, but in June 2021, a New Jersey federal judge refused to toss out the class action lawsuit.
