Sure, Brut Aerosol Spray Recall Alert Overview:

  • Who: HRB Brands is voluntarily recalling lots of its Sure and Brut aerosol sprays.
  • Why: The company found unexpected levels of known human carcinogen benzene in the propellant that sprays the product out of the can.
  • Where: The product was distributed nationally in the United States.

Brut and Sure brand spray deodorants are the latest to be recalled as a growing number of deodorant manufacturers discover their aerosol products contain the cancer-causing chemical benzene.

In a recall notice posted Feb. 16 to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration website, TCP HOT Acquisition LLC, also known as HRB Brands, said it was voluntarily recalling lots of its Sure and Brut aerosol sprays due to the presence of benzene.

“While benzene is not an ingredient in any of the recalled products, our review showed that unexpected levels of benzene came from the propellant that sprays the product out of the can,” the company said.

The recalled products are packaged in aerosol cans and were distributed nationally in the United States except for Brut Aerosol Deodorant, which was distributed in Canada.

“Consumers should stop using the recalled products if the expiration date is on or before August 2023 and dispose of them appropriately,” according to the company.

Benzene is classified as a human carcinogen. Exposure can occur by inhalation, orally, and through the skin and it can result in cancers including leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders which can be life-threatening.

To date, no reports of adverse events related to this recall have been reported, the company said. It is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

HRB Brands Notifying Retailers, Arranging For Returns

Retailers of the products are also being notified by recall letter and are arranging for return of all recalled products.

HRB Brands is the latest company to announce a recall over the presence of benzene in deodorant.

Recently, Valisure, an independent analytical pharmacy, conducted a study finding benzene contamination in a number of healthcare, cosmetic and sunscreen products. It filed a citizen’s petition in May asking the Food and Drug Administration to recall a number of products from shelves.

There have been a growing number of consumer complaints targeting companies in the wake of Valisure’s study, including against Procter & Gamble, Prestige Consumer Healthcare, Suave and others.
