Apple agreed to a settlement of up to $14.42 million to resolve claims that iPhone software caused power management problems and performance issues.
The settlement benefits Canadians who owned and/or purchased an Apple Phone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, SE, 7 or 7 Plus smartphone device with iOS 10.2.1 or later (for iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, or SE) or iOS 11.2 or later (for iPhone 7 or 7 Plus) installed or downloaded before Dec. 21, 2017. Consumers can look up their phones’ serial numbers to check their eligibility for the settlement.
According to the iPhone power management class action lawsuit, certain iOS updates caused iPhones to shut down unexpectedly, caused premature battery aging and led to other performance issues. Apple allegedly knew about the effect of these updates but misrepresented them to Canadians to conceal the problems.
Apple is a technology company that sells smartphones, laptops, computers, wearable tech and more.
Apple hasn’t admitted wrongdoing but agreed to pay between $11.13 million and $14.42 million to resolve the iPhone power management class action lawsuit.
Under the settlement terms, class members who submit an approved claim are entitled to $17.50 for each covered iPhone they owned.
If the claims, fees, administration costs and other expenses exceed the maximum settlement amount, class members payments will be reduced proportionately.
If the claims, fees, administration costs and other expenses do not reach the minimum settlement amount, payments to class members will be increased proportionately, up to a maximum of $150.
If multiple class members submit claims related to the same iPhone, the payment for that device will be divided equally between them.
The deadline for exclusion and objection was Jan. 10, 2024.
The court granted the settlement final approval March 4, 2024.
Class members must submit a valid claim form by Sept. 2, 2024, to receive a settlement payment.
