The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website published the recall June 29. It applies to Bose Acoustimass, Lifestyle and Companion bass modules produced before April 2006.
Bose sold about 884,000 bass modules in the United States, 98,000 in Canada and 18,300 in Mexico.
According to the recall, the speaker’s electrical components can fail, posing a fire hazard.
Bose received 21 reports worldwide of the bass modules igniting or melting, including three incidents of fires resulting in property damage to carpeting, an entertainment cabinet and materials surrounding the bass box. No injuries have been reported so far, the company says.
Bose is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.
Unplug, stop using bass modules immediately, Bose recall states
Consumers should immediately stop using and unplug the bass modules and contact Bose to arrange for a free repair or a 40% discount on a replacement, according to the recall notice.
Bose sold the bass modules at Bose stores, Best Buy, Circuit City, Sam’s Club, Sears and other electronics stores nationwide and online at Bose.com from Jan. 1994 through April 2007 for between $220 and $2,200.
In other Bose news, in 2020, the company faced class action claims alleging its wireless headphones secretly collected user information through the Bose connect mobile app.
