Sesame Seeds and Pistachios Recall Overview:

  • Who: A recall has been issued for white sesame seeds and Alburj brand Halawa Pistachio Extra products.
  • Why: Testing by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency came back positive for Salmonella contamination.
  • Where: The recall is nationwide.

A recall has been issued due to possible Salmonella contamination for a number of sesame seed and pistachio products sold in Alberta.

Testing by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) set the recall in motion earlier this month for Alburj brand Halawa Pistachio Extra products and a number of white sesame seed products.

Fandi Import Export Ltd, which manufactures the Alburj brand pistachio product, recalled the product, while the CFIA is telling consumers to throw out or return the product to its place of purchase.

The CFIA is currently conducting a food safety investigation amid the positive tests and is in the process of verifying that the affected products are being removed from shelves.

The affected white sesame seed products were sold in a variety of sizes and sold at locations throughout Alberta.

The recall includes Going Nuts brand Salad Crunchy (Mix), which contains potentially affected sesame seeds and was sold online and in Alberta.

Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick,” the agency said. “Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections.”

Salmonella Concerns Prompt Several Recalls, Class Action

Potential Salmonella contamination was also at the center of a separate recall issued this month for onions that were shipped from Mexico to the United States and Puerto Rico

A class action lawsuit was also filed last year in the Superior Court of Québec against Thomson International, after it was discovered the company sold red onions contaminated with Salmonella
