Driscoll’s Blueberries Recall Overview:
- Who: Italian Produce Company Ltd. has recalled Driscoll’s blueberries.
- Why: The blueberries, which were imported from Peru, are being recalled for containing small metallic spheres.
- Where: The recall took place in Ontario, Canada.
In a not-berry-sweet recall, Driscoll’s blueberries are being pulled from the shelves in Ontario, Canada due to the possible presence of small metallic spheres.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) said the recall was in connection to a September recall in the United States, where blueberries imported from a fruit grower in Peru were found to have the metal pieces.
Sixty crates of those berries were then imported into Ontario by Italian Produce Company Ltd. Italian Produce issued the first recall in September, and CFIA said in an October announcement that it was verifying that all the affected berries had been pulled from the shelves of Canadian grocery stores.
Driscoll’s Blueberries Recall Details
The affected blueberries are in 12 x 551 ml containers and have case codes 014006 0804, 014006 0809, and 014006 0810.
Driscoll’s said in a statement that its “rigorous food safety standards apply regardless of where our berries are grown, we are taking this incident seriously.”
“Our commitment is to ensure that we always provide consumers with the freshest, most flavorful, and completely safe berries.”
The California-based seller of fresh berries is a fourth-generation family business that has been in the Reiter and Driscoll families since the late 1800s and it isn’t the only company that has had to pull its products from the shelves over metal contamination.
This week, Tastykake multipack cupcakes were recalled by their manufacturer, Flowers Foods, Inc, due to the potential presence of tiny fragments of metal mesh wire. The recall was initiated following notification by a vendor of the possible contamination in a supplied ingredient.
