Eat Smart Salad Recall Overview:

  • Who: Curation Foods has recalled 13 Eat Smart Chopped Salad Kits.
  • What: The kits have been recalled due to fears of listeria contamination.
  • Where: The products were sold nationwide in Canada.

Curation Foods is recalling 13 of its Eat Smart Chopped Salad Kits in Canada due to possible listeria contamination.

The first recall, issued on August 24, only included the brand’s Asian Sesame Chopped Salad Kit. Two more updates have seen the list of affected products grow to include Avocado Cheddar Ranch, Chili-Lime Crunch, Homestyle Ranch, Hot Honey, Mexican Fiesta, Salt & Vinegar, Spicy Sweet Kale, Strawberry Harvest, three sizes of Sweet Kale, and Thai Style Chili Mango salad kits.

So far, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the products, which have been sold in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Quebec, and possibly nationwide at the retail, or consumer, level.

Consumers Warned to Check for Eat Smart Chopped Salad Kits

All of the recalled salads are Eat Smart Brand and are Chopped Salad Kits. The products were sold in different sizes, and have expiration dates of September 10, 2021. For more details, including UPC numbers, packaged sizes, and pictures of products, visit the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) web page.

The recall was triggered by CFIA test results. In the initial recall notice, the agency said that food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick.

“Symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk.”

Although infected pregnant women may experience only mild, flu-like symptoms, the infection can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn or even stillbirth. In severe cases of illness, people may die, the agency warned.

It advised consumers not to eat any of the products, and either discard them or take them back to the purchasing store for a full refund. It added that consumers should clean out their refrigerator with a mild bleach solution after discarding the salad kits to kill any remaining bacteria, and wash their hands with soap and water after handling.

Possible listeria contamination is a common reason for food recalls in Canada. In May, health authorities warned of listeria contaminations in soft cheese and mushrooms

Top Class Actions will continue to monitor this and other food safety recalls to help keep consumers informed.
