Castel Regio has recalled its Taleggio DOP soft cheese across British Columbia due to possible listeria contamination.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced the recall on May 12, saying in the recall notice that an investigation had shown the cheese was contaminated with listeria monocytogenes, which may not look or smell spoiled, but can make a person feel sick.
The affected cheeses were sold across British Columbia and Quebec in variable sizes. They have a UPC code of 3 254550 032272, lot number 11091, and best before date of March 31, 2021.
So far, there have been no reports of illnesses linked to the product.
The CFIA is conducting an investigation and is urging consumers not to consume the cheese, and instead dispose of it or return it. The CFIA said in the recall notice that symptoms of listeria poisoning can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache, and neck stiffness.
“Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Although infected pregnant women may experience only mild, flu-like symptoms, the infection can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn or even stillbirth. In severe cases of illness, people may die,” the notice stated.
Listeria contamination can often lead to food recalls. Recently, Canadian grocery stores had to pull Golden Mushroom brand Enoki mushrooms from the shelves due to fears of listeria contamination. The recall was issued by Goldenway International Trade Co., Ltd. on May 7 and was also triggered by test results from the CFIA.
