Canadian grocery stores are pulling Golden Mushroom brand Enoki mushrooms from the shelves due to fears of listeria contamination.
The recall was issued by Goldenway International Trade Co., Ltd. on May 7 and was triggered by test results from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).
CFIA said in the recall notice that there had been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of the product.
The 200 gram bags of Enoki mushrooms were sold in Ontario and Quebec and possibly nationally, and have the UPC: 8 809201 000039. All units sold up to and including May 7, 2021 are included in the recall.
CFIA is now launching a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products. The agency urged consumers to check for the product in their homes, and dispose of them or return them. It added that if consumers became sick from eating the mushrooms, they should call a doctor.
“Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick,” the notice says.
“Symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Although infected pregnant women may experience only mild, flu-like symptoms, the infection can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn or even stillbirth. In severe cases of illness, people may die.”
This isn’t the first time Enoki mushrooms have been recalled due to fears of listeria contamination. In the U.S. in April, cases Guan’s Mushroom Co., which were sold at retail stores nationwide, were recalled due to possible listeria contamination.
