Pork Scratchings Recall Overview:

  • Why: The recall is associated with a wider recall as nearly 200 people have been sickened by salmonella linked to pork scratching products.

Mr. Porky brand Original Scratchings are being recalled in Canada amid a wider recall in which nearly 200 people have been sickened by a Salmonella outbreak linked to pork scratching products.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) said Monday’s recall was triggered by a similar recall in another country.

It comes just days after the Tayto Group Ltd — Mr. Porky’s owner —  recalled a number of Mr Porky, Jay’s and The Real Pork Crackling Company products in the United Kingdom because they might be contaminated with salmonella, Food Safety News reported.

Since September 2020, there have been 179 reported cases of Salmonella Infantis linked to pork crackling products across the United Kingdom, the Food Standards Agency said.

About a third of the confirmed cases have been hospitalized due to the infections so far. There have been no deaths. The ages of those sickened range from 0 to 91 years old with a median age of 53, and two thirds of cases have been reported since June 2021.

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits

In Canada, the recall affects all Mr. Porky brand Original Scratchings. The company responsible for the recall in Canada is Morgan Williams International Inc.

“Check to see if you have the recalled product in your home. Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the store where they were purchased,” the CFIA said.

The products were distributed nationally in Canada.

As of the posting of this recall, there have been no reported illnesses associated with the pork scratchings in Canada. The CFIA is verifying that the industry is removing the recalled product from the marketplace.

Symptoms of Salmonella infection can include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food, the CFIA said. In some cases, diarrhea may be so severe that patients require hospitalization.

Older adults, children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems, such as cancer patients, are more likely to develop a severe illness and serious, sometimes life-threatening conditions.

Salmonella outbreaks can sometimes lead to class action lawsuits in Canada. Last year, multiple class action lawsuits were launched against Thomson International over salmonella-infected onions.
