42,500 packs of assorted kids’ garden tools are being recalled over a ‘chemical hazard,’

If your child has their own gardening tools, you may want to check the label.

A total 42,500 packs of assorted kids’ garden tools are being recalled over a ‘chemical hazard,’ as they contain more barium than is legally allowed.

The recall was issued Wednesday by Health Canada and affects all Yardworks Assist Kids Garden Tools purchased between 2019 and 2021.

Yardworks is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Barium can cause severe health effects including cramps, nausea and vomiting. It can also affect the kidneys. According to Health Canada, in humans, the kidneys have been seen to be affected following exposure to high levels of the element in the event of barium poisoning.

It can be found in the coating on some toys and products, as well as in the water supply. As of March 24, the company has had no reports of incidents or injury in Canada.

The tools were sold at Canadian Tire from January in 2019 until March this year. To check if your child’s tools are in the recall, look for a sticker on the handle of the tool.

The Yardworks Kids Garden Tools will have a 5-digit manufacturing date code, seen above the barcode. All codes ending in 19, 20 or 21 are affected by this recall.

If you do own one of the affected products, your child should immediately stop using the tools and you may return them to any Canadian Tire store for a full refund, the notice says.

The recall was issued after Canadian Tire showed that the accessible surface coating and applied surface coating components of the garden tools contain barium in excess of the allowable limit in the Canadian Toys Regulations.

Latest Recalls on Baby and Toddler Products

Health Canada has issued a number of recalls on products for infants over the past year, including for bath wraps, bassinets and pram kits. The items, according to the agency, pose a range of hazards to babies, from strangulation to flammability.

Health Canada maintains a section of their website dedicated to health risks and safety, including a list of products for infants and children that have been recalled in Canada.

In March last year, Grizzly Children’s Tool Kits were recalled because they reportedly contained amounts of lead that surpass the allowable limits.

According to Health Canada’s website, the agency issues notifications about recalls it identifies through its surveillance tools. The agency wants to share this information with the public by sending out the recall notices and other advisories.

“Recalls and safety alerts are sent out when we have important information to share—meaning you can feel more secure when choosing and using products,” the Health Canada website says.
