Whiskas Cat Food Recall Overview:

  • Who: Mars Petcare Canada issued a voluntary recall of 14 of its Whiskas brand dry cat foods.
  • Why: Mars claims the cat foods contained raw ingredients that did not meet their specifications.
  • Where: The recall applies to products sold across Canada.

Mars Petcare Canada voluntarily recalled 14 of its Whiskas brand dry cat food products on Sept 3.

The company says the limited recall was made out of an abundance of caution after it discovered the products were made with raw ingredients that were “outside of stringent internal quality specifications.”

Mars says it has not received any complaints from consumers related to the affected cat food products.

Recalled Whiskas Cat Food Products

All of the recalled products are dry cat or kitten food with either chicken, salmon, tuna, or beef flavour. The best by dates on the affected cat foods are primarily between June and August of this year.

A full list of the affected cat food products can be found here

Consumers who purchased the recalled products should discard them and stop feeding them to their pets, says Mars.

Consumers with questions about the recall can contact Mars by phone or online

Top Class Actions will continue to monitor this and other food recalls to help keep consumers and their furry friends safe.

A judge in the United States recently allowed a class action lawsuit against Mars Petcare U.S. to go ahead that alleged the company falsely advertised allergy-friendly dog food as chicken and grain free.

In April, meanwhile, a recall was issued in the United States by J.M. Smucker Co. after the company found certain bags of its Meow Mix cat food were possibly contaminated with salmonella

  1. Christen says:

Whiskas admitted to me there was a mycotoxin in the food.!! Cats are highly sensitive to this. Our cat was put to sleep on New Year’s after dying of severe kidney disease which came on after he had eaten most of the bag of recalled food. The vet who euthanized him said it would be pretty coincidental for it not to have been the cause. He was healthy and only 6 years old. He first went into the vet because he wasn’t wanting to eat. Had Whiskas confessed our cats were exposed to a mycotoxin the treatment would have been VERY different. They didn’t give us a chance to save our pet. I contacted Whiskas to find out why the recall but it was too late. Our cat had the highest bilirubin levels vet had ever seen. I have spoken with Whiskas a few times and pleaded with them to tell pet owners what was REALLY in the food. So far I just get a lot of, “Sorry kitty died.” Right now the info is with the pet wellness dept. Honestly I’m traumatized to see the bag in stores, wondering whose cat is suffering but no one knows. If the company won’t make public what they’ve done they could at least reimburse per owners. We are out $1200. Far worse than that, our cat was a therapy cat and his death was deeply upsetting for the young man who depended on him.

If your cat has eaten this food and acting strange I would get him/her to a vet straight away and tell them there is possible exposure to mycotoxin.

My cat was eating whiskas and meow mix cat food for many years please add me to your list

Our cat went blind September 19,2921. Had him to the animal hospital, saying might be due to kidneys!!! He has never had issues. After several vet visits, unsure exactly what was going on, he then had his head tilted to one side and only walked in circles. Needless to say, October 8, 2021 we had to put him down. Could this have happened from Whiskas, we did have a bag, 3/4 empty when we heard about recall !

    1. Heather Swim says:

I had taken my six year old cat wilyward to the casselman vet on Oct 15 of 2021 due to a serious illness and blockage tooth decae and cause I could pay for his surgery the vet put him down and I fed him whiskey dry tuna cat food since he was a 2 years old old why did the recall take so long my baby wilyward may have still been here.

  4. Tabatha VanderWoude says:

I have one cat who lost all the fur on her belly and inside of her legs after consuming this product.
Sadly our other cat died from consuming this product. The cat that died is usually on a weight management diet food but she reached her goal and we were not able to get access to her food so we fed her whiskas for 4-5 days and then she died. She had an excessive amount of saliva for those 4-5 days she was eating the whiskas as well as some vomiting it was very strange. We are very sad to have lost here.

    1. Nicole Veltman says:

OMG my cat is currently experiencing these exact same issues. I hate the thought of me maybe having to put him down if he doesn’t begin to improve soon. I believe he may just be to old for this particular fight.

  5. Stephanie Paquet says:

My cat died Because of the recall food … Im in Québec Canada. They want to pay me vet bills. But for me they deserve a class action suit. Im french bu you can contact me if your pet is sick or is dead. More we are against is the best. stephaniepaquet92@outlook.com or Stéphanie paquet on fb my background photo is my black cat who passed.

  6. Jill says:

Our 1 year old cat became lethargic and very ill while eating Whiskas. We brought him to the vet and he said it was an allergy, possibly plastic. We removed all his plastic toys, but he continued to have swollen paws and huge lips. His skin made him twitch and he ran away from us and hid where we couldn’t reach/find him. He was a fun, spunky, loving cat and in a week after starting this food, his whole demeanor changed. After receiving the letter from Costco that there was a recall, we stopped feeding him the Whiskas, and just over a week later, his symptoms started to disappear. It’s been over a month that we stopped feeding him the Whiskas and he is back to his old self again. I hope that no internal damage to his organs occurred during those few stressful months. I am waiting for a return call from the company.

  7. LEONA says:

Ia the Whiskas wet food still alright?
From Canada and never heard of the dry food recall?
    Thx

  8. Jen says:

I like Brian’s comment. Every pet owner should have funds to pay for vet bills in addition to food. Otherwise, they shouldn’t have pets.

  9. Shelley says:

2 of our cats suddenly became sick one had to be put down and after spending a rediculous amount at the vet with zero answers its looking as though our 2nd cat will meet the same fate 🙁 are other pets dying from this food???????

    1. Stephanie Paquet says:

My cat is dead too 🙁 so sorry. If you wanna Talk with me. stephaniepaquet92@outlook.com. Im french from Québec but ok with english. I try to find other people Who lost their pets because of whiskas… For a class action

  10. Diane Jeffery says:

I just bought a bag of Whiskas cat dry food, I haven’t heard about the recall, have been buying it for months for my cat, can’t afford to throw it out, what am I to do?
    Thank you!

    1. Brian says:

if you can’t afford to throw the food out then you definitely can’t afford the veterinarian bills. call the company and demand a coupon for a free bag of food to replace the one that you can’t use but in the mean time, find something else to feed your cat. The vet bills from your cat being sick are sure to be a lot more than the 10 or 15$ you spent on the food.

      1. Will says:

We have a Himalayan Persion cat. With the current recall we have a problem because our cat only eats Whiskas for almost 9 years. We tried changing his food without any luck. We hope that Whiskas will be available soon because we can’t find any food that works for our cat. I also did send Whiskas an email. Hope to hear from them soon.
