A person hands a bowl of kibble dog food to a golden retriever - blue buffalo

UPDATE:

  • The Court granted final approval to this settlement Aug. 4, 2021.

A judge has certified a class action lawsuit accusing Blue Buffalo of falsely advertising the content of its pet food products.

Superior Court Judge Calum MacLeod certified the Class on April 15, 2021.

The certification establishes a nationwide Class of purchasers of the Blue Buffalo products before September 2019. This applies only to the complaints of false advertising, not to complaints of the content of the products actually causing harm to pets.

The class action lawsuit, filed in February 2016, argued that Blue Buffalo’s labelling, advertising, and promotion of its pet food as a healthy alternative to other brands were false and misleading.

The lead plaintiff claims Blue Buffalo’s “True Blue Promise” that the products contain no poultry byproduct meal, corn, wheat, soy, or artificial preservatives, colors, or flavors has no scientific basis.

In fact, the class action lawsuit states, the Blue Buffalo products actually contain “substantial amounts” of poultry by-product meal, as well as corn, rice, grains, artificial preservatives, and other ingredients that contradict the company’s “True Blue Promise.”

Nearly 4,000 Class Members already have registered with Class counsel, Judge MacLeod wrote.

If the settlement is approved, Class Members will be able to object to the settlement or to opt out of it, according to Judge MacLeod’s endorsement.

These Class Members will be entitled to “modest payments… without the need to submit a claim form or proof of purchase,” according to the endorsement.

A notice is expected to go out by April 30, 2021.

A hearing to approve the Blue Buffalo false advertising settlement is scheduled for July 29, 2021.

I fed my dogo argitina blue buffalo dog food for years until she started getting sick off blue buffalo and I mean puking and pooping everywhere so i had no choice but to change her dog food.

  2. Maureen Watson says:

I fed my 2 small breed dogs Blue Buffalo believing it was of the highest, healthiest brand available due to their claims. After 10 years I switched and found their skin issues to clear and look much healthier.

  3. Kelly-Ann says:

I have been feeding my dog Blue Buffalo as it is advertised to be the healthier option. My dog has severe allergies & skin issues that remain unresolved-I guess I know why that is now. Please add me to the list.

  4. Leah-Mary McGow says:

I was buying this food because it’s supposed to be much healthy for my Mainecoon. Now to find out that it isn’t healthier than the crappy ones… And at these prices… While they are lying to us?! At least the lesser brands are honest!!!

    1. JULIE COLEMAN says:

My lab was on blue Buffalo and ended up going to the vet several times with stomach upset diarrhea and vomiting I called the company and asked if there was any issues with their food

  5. Susan Smith says:

I fed both my dogs Blue Buffallo thinking that this was good food for my boys. Both had dreadful skin issues and repeated visits to the vet for pills, They had upset stomach and diarroea. It was really awful ! They just lied and my boys and my wallet paid a high price

  6. Tammy Bedder says:

My dog & cat both ate blue buffalo. They say “If You Love Then Like Family Feed Them Like Family” What a crock.
Both losing fur, skin issues & constantly vomiting. I saw the posts on social media somewhere about 6 months ago. Mind you not in regards to this lawsuit. I commented, emailed & they never even responded! To find out you ate being ripped off by food that you believed was good for your pets ! These are not only my pets. They are my family. I’m choked thinking this diet from Blue Buffalo I not only paid out my backside for, was in fact the cause of my pets health issues & by far the major contributor. Too put your trust into a product you truly believe in and find the company you think is doing right by you are BOTTOM LINE LIARS & in fact making your pets I’ll. Well that makes me I’ll. My cat will be 9 soon and ate blue from 2 years old up until 5 -6 months ago. My dog will be 11 & I adopted/rescued her at 2 years old & has been eating blue from day I brought her home until 5-6 months ago. I live on 800.00cdn a month and bought 60-80.00cdn bags of blue for years. People thought I was crazy. But I love them they are my family. Blue led me to believe I was doing a good thing. All the while being lied too. The straw that broke the camel’s back is confronting then & their non responses to my many attempts of the “So called rumors” they simple ignored ! Well that alone is 100% guilt on their part ! I actually keep my records & can prove most all my purchases of this pet food & the astronomical prices to give my babies the best to find I was paying for additives & fillers in a bag worth the weight in gold. I’d be richer & I could’ve fed them sand & saw dust pay nothing & they would have been healthier ! I WANT COMPENSATION FOR THEIR FALSE ADVERTISING I KEPT CALLING THEM ON & TOTALLY DISRESPECTED ME WITH IGNORING ME. LET ALONE THE LIES & clearly knowing I want to vomit everytime I hear their slogan “Live the Mike Family Feed Them Like Family ! They should be charged with false advertising too ! But at the end of the day, THEY WERE HURTING MY FUR BABIES , HURTING MY POCKETBOOK & KNOWING ALL ALONG WHAT THEY WERE DOING & DISREGARD IGNORE & STILL WON’T TAKE RESPONSIBILITY.
I ASK FOR NOTHING FOR ME EVER. I’M ASKING NOW ! I’M WANTING PAYBACK FOR THE STRESS & ISSUES THIS COMPANY HAS CAUSED MY MOLLY & TROUBLE.

  7. Geri Shiels says:

    My dog had diarrhea
    Shin issues
    Vet bills
    Nasty product

  8. Kirk says:

Why am I just hearing about this now?!? It’s already too late to join this class action??

This is such BS…why aren’t these class actions required to send out some sort of letter to the eligible population or go through a major media campaign to ensure that everyone that may have been affected by a product like this is included in the lawsuit? These class actions seem to be poorly managed, and its almost as though there is minimal effort in getting individuals to join so that the payout is minimized. It’s also BS that the money put into class actions and isn’t claimed gets returned to the companies at fault…this is wrong, the money should be used for the public good.

  9. V. Smith says:

We’ve used this product for years. Just stop buying it before the pandemic. We used salve on our dogs for years because of skin issues. Never thought that the dog food wasn’t good for them.

    1. Cortney Brimner says:

My dog got severely sick as she was allergic to chicken and not knowing we gave her Blue Buffalo food and we ended up having her at the vet which in long term we had to have her put down she was an extreme pain and we were not going to be selfish and try to keep her alive as she was poisoned by Blue Buffalo food.

  10. Gloria Gould says:

My dogs were doing fine until i tried Blue Buffalo. Had to go to vet food for help.
