Nearly 80,000 people are still eligible to make a claim in a $26 million Rogers Wireless Communications settlement from 2014.

Consumers who entered into a wireless phone contract with Rogers Wireless between January 1, 2007, and June 30, 2010; cancelled the contract before it ended; and paid an early termination fee between Feb. 21, 2008, and June 30, 2013, are eligible to make a claim, according to the settlement website.

Consumers must also be current or former residents of Québec during the applicable period in order to file a claim, Narcity reported.

On Dec. 5, 2014, Québec Superior Court ruled Rogers Wireless had to repay its customers for early termination fee charges, iPhoneInCanada reported.

The Court determined the early termination fees were “abusive.”

Rogers Wireless Communications provides wireless, residential, and media services for business and personal needs in Canada, according to information on the company’s website. Rogers is Canada’s largest wireless provider.

A media campaign has begun in an effort to contact Class Members invite them to make a claim in the Rogers Wireless settlement, according to a Cision newswire press release.

About 20,000 secure text messages will be sent to active mobile phone numbers linked to a Rogers Wireless account for which an early termination fee was paid before 2013.

About $8 million of the $26 million settlement fund has yet to be paid out, and about 78,000 people have not made a claim.

The amount to be paid to each consumer depends upon the service that customer purchased:

  • SME voice package members can expect $327.91
  • Consumer voice plan members can each expect $103.86
  • SME data plan members each will receive $42.70

In order to file a valid claim, Class Members must provide the name of the Rogers Wireless account holder at the time of the termination, as well as one of the phone numbers associated with that account, the settlement website says.

All compensation that goes unclaimed will be distributed to third parties, as the law states.

Court documents related to this settlement and the payment distribution may be found on the documentation page of the settlement website.
