Hill’s Pet Nutrition Inc. agreed to pay $575,000 to resolve claims that its Prescription Diet and Science Diet canned dog food contain dangerous vitamin D levels.

The settlement benefits Canadian consumers who purchased certain Hill’s Prescription Diet or Hill’s Science Diet canned dog foods between Sept. 1, 2018, and May 31, 2019. A full list of eligible products can be found on the settlement website.

According to the class action lawsuit, certain Hill’s canned dog food products contained excessively high levels of vitamin D. When dogs consumed this food, they allegedly experienced vitamin D toxicity — leading to illness, hospitalization and even death.

Hill’s Pet Nutrition is a dog- and cat-food company that sells specialized dry and wet food.

Hill’s hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a $575,000 settlement to resolve the dog food class action lawsuit.

Under the terms of the settlement, class members can receive financial compensation for the purchase price of the recalled dog food products. Claimants who provide proof of purchase can receive the full purchase price of the products. Class members who do not have proof of purchase can receive the suggested retail price of the products or up to $20 total.

In addition, class members can receive compensation for injuries or deaths resulting from the dog food.

Claimants can receive up to $500 for screening, diagnosing and treating costs related to the consumption of excess vitamin D. Claimants whose dogs died as a result of excess vitamin D can receive $5,000 from the settlement.

The exclusion deadline is Nov. 20, 2023. There is no objection deadline for this settlement.

The settlement was granted final approval on Sept. 21, 2023.

To receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by March 26, 2024.
