Plaintiffs in the Suunto class action lawsuit accused the company of manufacturing defective dive computers that fail to accurately report dive information. This failure can allegedly put divers at risk for serious injury or even death.

Suunto makes sports watches and dive products, including dive computers. These products are geared toward athletes and outdoor enthusiasts.

Suunto hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay an undisclosed sum to resolve these allegations.

The settlement includes two parts: a reimbursement program and an inspection, repair and replacement program.

Under the settlement’s $77,500 reimbursement program, class members can seek compensation if their dive computer had a depth pressure sensor failure and they either do not have the dive computer because they discarded it due to the failure or previously paid for repairs to fix the dive computer’s failure. Compensation through this program will vary depending on the retail price of the dive computer, the model type and the dive computer’s age.

If any funds remain in the reimbursement program after claims are paid, this money will be used to provide e-learning certifications or online advance training classes from the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI). PADI classes will be provided until funds are depleted on a first come, first served basis.

Future failure of dive computers will be handled through the settlement’s inspection, repair and replacement program. Under this program, consumers can send their dive computers to an authorized Suunto service center to be inspected for no cost. Defective dive computers will be repaired or replaced at no cost to Class Members.

The deadline for exclusion and objection was Sept. 9, 2022.

The court granted the settlement final approval Oct. 26, 2022.

Class Members can seek an inspection of their dive computer under the settlement’s inspection, repair and replacement program for eight years after the dive computer was manufactured or Oct. 26, 2025 — whichever is later.

In order to seek reimbursement from the settlement, class members must submit a valid claim form by Feb. 28, 2023.
