Baby Square is recalling all of its Hoppetta 2-Way Gauze Sleep Bags made for children aged 3 months to 3 years due to a flammability hazard that poses burn risks to the children.
In a recall notice posted by Health Canada, the company urged consumers to immediately stop using the recalled sleeping bags and discard or return them to Baby Square for a refund.
The Hoppetta 2-Way Gauze Sleeping Bags are made in Japan from 100 percent cotton and are available in blue, pink, rabitte and polka patterns, according to the notice.
Sleepwear Can Cause ‘Severe Burns’ to Children’s Bodies
The garment is designed as a 2-way sleeping bag and transforms from a sleeper into a dressing gown. It is approximately 35cm in width and 58cm in length.
According to Health Canada, the agency’s sampling and evaluation found that the products do not meet the flammability requirements for children’s sleepwear.
“Loose-fitting children’s sleepwear can contact ignition sources such as stove elements, candles and matches more readily than tight-fitting sleepwear and once ignited will burn rapidly, potentially resulting in severe burns to large areas of the child’s body,” the recall notice says.
Baby Square said it had not received any reports of incidents or injuries in Canada as of Jan. 21. The company sold 119 of the sleeping bags between April 2019 and Jan. 2022.

Baby and children’s products are frequently the subjects of safety recalls that can oftentimes result in class action lawsuits.
Recently in the U.S., retailer Mushie & Co had to recall 333,725 FRIGG silicone pacifiers after they were found to pose a choking hazard to babies. In a recall notice, Mushie & Co says it is recalling the Classic and Daisy designs, which both have a silicone nipple on a base that has a fine slit that can cause the nipple to detach from the plastic shield, posing the choking hazard.
