Canada Recall Roundup Overview:

  • Who: HQ Fine Foods, Wismettac Asian Foods, Inc. and Evive Nutrition Inc. are recalling a range of food products.
  • Why: The various food products, which includes sandwiches, red bean cakes and smoothies, pose serious health risks, including listeria contamination, cyanide poisoning and allergic reactions.
  • Where: The recalls are effective in Canada.

A range of food products are being recalled across Canada this week due to posing serious health risks to consumers, including the risks of cyanide poisoning, listeria contamination and serious allergic reactions to those with dairy allergies.

Wismettac Asian Foods Red Bean Cake Recall

Wismettac Asian Foods, Inc. is recalling its Shirakiku brand Baked Red Bean Cake due to undeclared milk. In a recall notice, the company says all of its 6-piece, 318-gram red bean cakes with the UPC code 0 74410 65714 7 that do not include milk on the label are subject to the recall.

The company says there have been no reported reactions associated with the consumption of this product but is urging those with a milk allergy not to consume the recalled product  “as it may cause a serious or life-threatening reaction.”

“Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased,” the company says.

HQ Fine Foods Sandwich Recall

HQ Fine Foods is recalling some Quality and Hygaard Fine Foods Ltd. brand sandwiches due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

There are 17 sandwiches involved in the recall, including those with chicken, beef, eggs, turkey and more.

In a recall notice, the company urges consumers not to eat the sandwiches and says, “recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased.”

“Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick,” the company says, adding so far there have been no reports of illness in relation to the recall.

Evive Nutrition Inc. Immunity Super Functional Smoothie Recall

Evive Nutrition Inc. is recalling Evive Immunity Super Functional Smoothie due to the presence of raw elderberries, which contain cyanogenic glycosides, a natural toxin that can cause cyanide poisoning.

In a recall notice, the company says the recall was triggered by consumer complaints, adding that there have been reported illnesses associated with the consumption of the smoothies.

Raw elderberries, which are in the smoothies, naturally contain cyanogenic glycosides, which can release cyanide after being eaten. The human body can eliminate small amounts of cyanide, but larger amounts can result in cyanide poisoning, which could lead to death, the company says.

Symptoms of cyanide poisoning include weakness and confusion, anxiety, restlessness, headache, nausea, difficulty breathing and shortness of breath, loss of consciousness, seizures and cardiac arrest. Evive urges consumers to call their doctor if they think they have become sick from eating the product.

“Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased,” the company says in the recall notice.

For all of the recalls, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) says it is conducting food safety investigations, which may lead to the recall of other products.

“If other high-risk products are recalled, the CFIA will notify the public through updated food recall warnings,” CFIA says.

Top Class Actions will continue to monitor these and other food product recalls to help keep consumers informed about important health risks.
