Toyota Rav4 Hybrid class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Toyota has been hit with a class action lawsuit.
  • Why: Certain Toyota Rav4 hybrid vehicles allegedly have a defect in which the hybrid system cable can corrode and break.
  • Where: The Toyota class action lawsuit was filed in Canada.

A new Toyota class action lawsuit alleges some Toyota Rav4 hybrid vehicles have a defect that causes the hybrid system cable to corrode and break.

Repairing this alleged defect can cost between $4,200 and $7,000, the Toyota class action lawsuit says.

Plaintiff Constantin Sultana filed the Toyota class action lawsuit on behalf of Quebec residents who own or lease a 2019-2022 model year Rav4 hybrid or Prime vehicle.

The affected Rav4 hybrid vehicles allegedly have a defect in which the high voltage cable that carries electricity to the rear motor to corrode prematurely, causing problems with the vehicle’s operation.

Toyota class action says warranty period for defective cable is too short and requires drivers to pay for expensive repairs

Toyota has allegedly known about the Rav4 hybrid cable defect since at least 2020 when the automaker issued a technical service bulletin notifying dealerships in the United States about issues with corrosion.

Sultana alleges that Toyota Canada guarantees the hybrid system on the affected vehicles for 8 years or 160,000 kilometers. However, the automaker allegedly limits the warranty on the hybrid system cable to just 3 years or 60,000 kilometers.

The Toyota Rav4 hybrid defect can manifest after the warranty has expired, leaving drivers to potentially pay thousands of dollars out-of-pocket to repair the defect.

The Toyota class action lawsuit asks Toyota Canada to reimburse Class Members for repair costs and other costs associated with the alleged defect, compensatory damages, and $300 in punitive damages for each putative Class Member.

In 2021, Transport Canada recalled certain 2018-2021 Toyota Tundra trucks because their halogen headlights may be prone to overheating, posing a potential fire risk. Drivers can find out if their vehicle is affected by a Toyota recall by entering their VIN online.

  1. Duane French says:

Same problem happened to me with my 2019 Rav 4, please let me know what happens with this lawsuit. Cost was $7000 to fix a machine that at the time had a little over 60000 kms. This is a defect without a doubt, that should be fixed.

  2. Colin Cochrane says:

Just purchased 2019 Rav 4 hybrid..
Just found out about the high voltage corrosion problem..
Would like to follow the law suit in Canada..
    Please advise..

  3. Tom says:

Confused. Which RAV4 Hybrid model years does this affect?

  4. Christian Bernard says:

Does anyone know if the 2021 Toyota Venza Hybrid has the same high voltage wire component as the frame is based out of the Rav4?
Hope everyone currently dealing with the issue wiil be compensate by the manufacturer as it obviously should.

    1. Kelly Van Caeyzeele says:

I just crawled under one before test driving. Looks to be equally exposed to me. I didn’t even bother test driving it.

  5. Deanna Lavigne says:

Ontario owner of Rav4 Hybrid. Just experienced problem. Estimated cost $5000 and so far told not under warranty as I am at 83000 km. Hoping I don’t have to wait two months for parts and can get compensated somehow.

    1. Garron Matthews says:

This is my exact problem diagnosed today. 2019 Rav4 hybrid. Paid in full this September.

  6. Aamer Rahim says:

My Rav4 2019 corrosion issue came in March 2022 it was within 36 months but mileage exceeded 60k so TOyota Canada didnt cover it. Eventually after fighting for over a month for my right, I had to sell it for 10k less than its market value. Please advise me what can I do to be part of the lawsuit. Thanks.

  7. Claire D says:

Yes, same thing happened to me. here in US. My 2019 Rav 4 hybrid was made in Canada. Here they estimated my cost to be $4000. I hope I may be part of this suit, seeing Toyota has not taken responsibility for this defective cable design or safety issue.

  8. Lisa says:

Ontario resident here. Two months ago, my 2020 Rav4 Hybrid had a hybrid system malfunction and needed the wiring harness to be replaced. I had just passed my 60,000 km warranty and was told this part will cost $4500. I was told that it will be an indefinite wait as there is no stock – I am still waiting. Will Ontario residents be covered in this class action lawsuit??

  9. Carrie-Leigh Stockwell says:

From Canada, and just days ago, the day we were to leave on our vacation, our 2020 Rav4 Hybrid XSE experienced a major Hybrid Malfunction. We took it to the dealer, and it was the high voltage line that had corroded.

Thankfully 8 weeks prior, before our warranty ran out, a family member had read about this in the newspaper. We had it checked then, and it was starting to corroded and it was noted in our file.

Our dealership said Toyota would not fix it unless it was completely corroded. But because they noted it in our file, even though our warranty is now up, they are covering it.

However, the replacement part is hard to get and I may be without a car for 1-6 months they said.

  10. Carmel says:

I have just experienced this problem in the United States. It will cost $5300 to repair and is not covered by the Hybrid warranty, even though the alert on my car indicated a malfunction in the hybrid system. Do you know if a class action has been filed in USA?
