Mercedes-Benz brakes recall overview:
- Who: Mercedes-Benz recalled almost a million cars worldwide.
- Why: The vehicles have a possible problem with the brake booster.
- Where: The recall is worldwide
Mercedes-Benz is recalling almost a million cars worldwide due to possible problems with the brake booster, the company said June 4.
Models of the SUV series ML and GL and the R-Class luxury minivan series produced between 2004 and 2015 are affected, the Guardian reports.
“Corrosion on the brake booster can in the worst case lead to the connection between the brake pedal and the braking system being interrupted,” Germany’s federal transport authority (KBA) says. “As a consequence, the service brake can stop functioning.”
Mercedes-Benz issued a statement to the AFP news agency, saying, in rare cases of very severe corrosion, it might be possible for a particularly strong or hard braking manoeuvre to cause mechanical damage to the brake booster, whereby the connection between brake pedal and brake system would fail.”
This could result in an increase in the brake pedal force needed to decelerate the vehicle and a potentially increased stopping distance.
The company said it would “start with the recall immediately” and contact the owners of the “potentially affected vehicles”.
“The recall process will involve inspecting potentially affected vehicles and, depending on the results of the inspection, replacing the parts where necessary,” Mercedes-Benz says in its statement. “Until the inspection takes place, we ask our customers not to drive their vehicles.”
Mercedes-Benz GL, ML and R-class vehicles recalled in U.S.
The news comes after Mercedes-Benz last month issued a recall for more than 290,000 of its GL, ML and R-class vehicles in the United States over the same concerns.
The recall affects Mercedes-Benz GL, ML and R-Class vehicles with model years ranging from 2006 to 2012, according to a recall notice published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on May 11.
Mercedes-Benz faces another class action lawsuit filed by a consumer earlier this month claiming the company concealed a defect in the transmission control units housed in some of its vehicles.
