Volkswagen Atlas Recall Overview:

  • Why: The recall is due to a wiring issue that can cause the vehicles to abruptly brake, inadvertently roll down windows, set off door sensors or delay airbag deployment.
  • Where: The recall is effective in the United States and Canada.

VW is recalling 222,892 vehicles due to a wiring issue that can cause the vehicles to abruptly brake, inadvertently roll down windows, set off door sensors and delay airbag deployment.

In a recall notice posted by the National Highway Transport Safety Agency, VW says it is recalling certain 2019-2020 Atlas, 2020-2023 Atlas Cross Sport and 2021-2023 Atlas FL vehicles due to a risk that the door wiring harness electrical contacts may corrode, disrupting the electrical connection and delaying the deployment of the driver or passenger front side airbag during a side impact crash.

It also says the issue can cause “inadvertent rolling down windows, inadvertent park brake engagement at low speeds (below approx. 3 km/h or 1.8 mph) and a warning regarding faulty door sensor.”

VW Drivers Report Near-Miss Crashes Due to Unexpected Braking

However, ABC News reports that 47 drivers have filed complaints about their brakes going off while driving with many saying it was while they were driving well above 1.8 mph. A driver from Mansfield, Ohio, said that the braking happened multiple times at speeds of 25 to 70 mph while Kendall Heiman, a Lawrence, Kansas, driver said her 2021 Atlas Cross Sport tried to stop multiple times while she was driving on roads, often while it was decelerating.

Heiman added that she was nearly rear-ended by another SUV while heading into a roundabout.

In the recall notice, VW highlights the main issue as the delayed airbag deployment. The automaker says that in a special side crash situation, the front side airbag may deploy later than designed, which may be caused “by excessive micromovement leading to fretting corrosion of the door wiring harness terminal contacts.”

“This may lead to an increased injury to vehicle occupants,” the recall notice says.

VW says it is currently developing a remedy to the issue and will be sending notification letters to owners informing them of the safety risk by May 10, 2022. A second notice will be sent once the remedy becomes available.

VW was hit with a class action lawsuit for a similar issue in June 2020. Plaintiffs alleged that stalling problems were present in various VW vehicles, including 2018 and 2019 Volkswagen GTI, Golf, Jetta, Passat and Tiguan vehicles equipped with 2.0L TSI engines.

Plaintiffs Marilyn Dickinson and Kate Conroy argued that the defect causes vehicles to suddenly stop, which poses a danger to the driver, car occupants and even other drivers on the road.

I have Atlas 2022, bought it brand new. makes horrible sound when i break. I heard it’s problem worn the break pads material. Dealership won’t do anything about it, I’ve made several complaints. I’m located in Texas. Why are we buying new vehicles if they’re not going to work as new?

I have a 2020 VW atlas cross sport SEL premium RLINE. Car was in the shop for well over 2 month ( no loaner) to have the recall fixed plus other issues. They had to replace my whole fuel tank cause it became disfigured. A year after buying I had to have the battery replaced due to leaking sulfuric acid. Hood release broke. Car burns oil horrible horrible mpg. Sensor go off all the time. My infotainment center since the update only works when it wants too now. So no radio or gps. It will change from normal to sport to echo when ever it feels like it. The remote start seldomly works from the key fob. Or the joke of a app. So yes they are pieces of crap and they aren’t doing nothing about it the issues either. And mine is out of warranty.

I had the same issue with my 2019 Tiguan in Canada and just had to pay to replace the door wiring harness. We had the parking break activate randomly. The side view mirror wouldn’t deploy. I could not roll down the drivers side window. It made the car very dangerous to drive. I had to pay parts and labour to replace the defective part. I am interested in joining any class action vs. VW.
